QUESTION 01

(a) Briefly explain the main components of 3-phase induction motor.

(b) Briefly explain available rotor types in 3-phase induction motor and explain advantages
and disadvantages of these rotors.

(c) What is the operation principle of 3-phase induction motor? Explain briefly with
necessary sketches.

(d) Briefly explain the main components of 3-phase synchronous generator.

(e) What are the rotor field structures of the rotors in synchronous generator? Explain
briefly.

QUESTION 02

(a) Show that the resultant magnetic field due to three phase is 3/2 times the maximum
strength of magnetic field produced by each phase separately and travelling with
angular velocity ω radians per second.

(b) Briefly explain percentage slip in induction motor

(c) A 12-pole, 3-phase and 500 rpm alternator used to power an induction motor. The full-
load speed of the motor is 1450 rpm, calculate:
i. Percentage slip
ii. Number of poles in motor

(d) An industrial induction motor consists of 4 wound poles and external supply is 50 Hz
source. Calculate:

i. Synchronous speed.
ii. Rotor speed when slip is 4%.
iii. Rotor frequency when rotor speed 600 rpm.

QUESTION 03

(a) A 3-phase induction motor runs at a speed of 1485 rpm at no-load and 1350 rpm at full-
load when supplied from a 50Hz, 3-phase line:

i. Calculate Number of poles in the motor


ii. Calculate slip at no-load and full-load
iii. Calculate frequency of rotor voltage at no-load and full-load

(b) A 5hp, 230V, 50Hz Induction motor has a rated full-load speed of 950 rpm. The
induced voltage per phase at stand still is 110V.

i. Calculate number of poles and percentage full-load slip.


ii. Voltage induced in rotor and its full-load frequency.

(c) Sketch and mark the torque-speed characteristic curve and torque-slip curve of an
induction motor.

(d) A 4-pole, 50Hz, 3-phase induction motor has rotor resistance of 0.21Ω and standstill
reactance of 0.7Ω per phase. Calculate the speed at which maximum torque is
developed.

QUESTION 04

(a) Briefly explain power flow diagram of an induction motor.

(b) The power input to the rotor of a 400V, 50Hz, 6-poles, 3-phase induction motor is
80kW. The rotor speed is 100 complete alternations per minute. Calculate:
i. Slip
ii. Developed mechanical power
iii. Rotor copper loss

(c) The power input to the 3-phase induction motor is 50kW and the corresponding stator
losses are 2kW. Calculate the total mechanical power and the rotor I2R loss when the
slip is 3%.

(d) A 4-pole, 3 phase induction motor runs at a speed of 1440 rpm on 500V, 50Hz supply.
The gross horse power developed by the rotor is 20.3. The mechanical losses are 2.23
horse power. The power factor of the motor is 0.88. Calculate:
i. The slip of the motor
ii. Rotor copper losses
iii. Total input when the stator losses are 2000 W.
iv. The efficiency
v. The line current
