Preparatory work

Warning!
The instructions concerning cab tilting
must be followed.

1. Drain the coolant Refer to the work description Draining the coolant.
2. Remove the battery cover and detach the negative cable.
3. Tilt the cab. Refer to the work description Cab tilting.

1. Remove the turbocharger induction pipe 1. The air pipe to the compressor must be detached
from the induction pipe.
2. Cover the air filter and turbocharger inlet 2.
3. Undo the coolant connections 3 for the expansion tank.
4. Undo the coolant hose 4 at the flange pipe.
5. Disconnect the ribbed hoses 5 of the charge air cooler.
6. If the vehicle has an engine heater: Undo the connection for the engine heater.
7. Disconnect and fold aside the exhaust pipe 7.
8. Undo the coolant pipe 8 for the retarder.
9. Undo the oil cooler pipe 9 for the gearbox.
10. Fit engine supports 99 318. The engine supports must be fitted before removing the gearbox.
Two bolts must be removed from the oil sump before the engine supports can be fitted.
11. Remove the gearbox. Refer to the work description Removing the gearbox.

Warning!
The instructions must be followed when
working on the belt circuit.

Note!
Avoid opening the circuit to the AC
system. If the system is opened, it must be
filled with new refrigerant and this may
only be done by authorised personnel.

1. If the vehicle has air conditioning: Remove the poly-V-belt 1. See the work description
Removing the poly-V-belt.
2. Detach the AC compressor 2 and move it aside.
3. Detach the compressor supply line 3.
4. Disconnect the earth lead 4.

5. Remove the protection cover 5 on the engine control unit and cut the cable ties.
6. Undo the top connector 6 at the engine control unit.
7. Disconnect the electrical cables 7 of the starter motor at the cable duct.
8. Disconnect the fuel connections 8. Mark and plug the fuel connections.
9. Detach the oil filler hose 9.
10. Undo the dipstick brackets 10.
11. Disconnect the pressure regulator hose 11 at the compressor.
12. Undo the hydraulic pump 12 for the power steering gear. The pump is secured in the flange
with 5 bolts.

Lifting eyes

Important!

The lifting eyes on the engine are not


designed to lift the whole vehicle and
therefore must not be used for this purpose.
All three lifting eyes on the engine must be
used when lifting the engine.

Important!

The lifting eyes are designed to manage a


maximum inclination angle of 30°, when
lifting an engine with the gearbox
removed. For engines without the gearbox
removed, the maximum angle is 20°.

1. Fasten the lifting chain 98 094 to the rear lifting eyes.


2. Fasten the lever block 587 308 to the front lifting eye.

Engine lift

1. Remove the bolts in the engine brackets.


2. Lift the engine out of the vehicle.
3. Check the vibration isolators. Renew them if they are worn.
