1. Briefly state the scientific method and why it is important to the advancement of science.

The process of the scientific method involves making conjectures (hypotheses), deriving
predictions from them as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments or
empirical observations based on those predictions. Scientists then test hypotheses by
conducting experiments or studies. It provides an objective, standardized approach to
conducting experiments and, in doing so, improves their results. By using a
standardized approach in their investigations, scientists can feel confident that they will
stick to the facts and limit the influence of personal, preconceived notions.

2. All experiments have a stated goal, and it is possible to logically state the methodology of

how to reach that goal. Briefly describe the methodology for making a favorite lunch.

3. How can something be precise but not accurate?

is

Accuracy refers to the closeness of a measured value to a standard or known value. For
Th

example, if in the lab you obtain a weight measurement of 3.2 kg for a given substance,
but the actual or known weight is 10 kg, then your measurement is not accurate. In this
case, your measurement is not close to the known value.
sh

Precision refers to the closeness of two or more measurements to each other. Using the
example above, if you weigh a given substance five times, and get 3.2 kg each time, then
your measurement is very precise. Precision is independent of accuracy. You can be very
precise but inaccurate,as described above.

Content and Analysis

1. Methodology - This experiment is not as simple as measuring and using a formula. The
cylinder is not solid in two respects: it is empty through its center, and the actual material is not
itself solid as it is 40% filled. State the methodology – how the equations will be used to achieve
the object of the lab (How much plastic material is used to make each of these cylinders?).

The equation which calculates the volume of the object is used to measure the space
occupied by the hollow cylinders, V=πr2h, but that's not all you would need to do to
figure that out. You need to figure out the volume of the other holes and add it together

2. Data Collection – In order to complete the lab, research and data collection are needed.

b) Define each variable used and the standard unit for each variable.

v= the volume, and the unit is meter cube (m^3), π = constant, value = (3.14) unitless,
is

r=radius unit= meter(m), h=height unit=meter(m)

Th

c) To solve the equation, one of many possible tools from the kit is used to take certain
measurements. Which tool was chosen and why?
sh

The swing arm protractor because it can measure the height and radius of a cylinder.

5. BONUS QUESTION – One student says that he used the string and the equation for
circumference to verify the outside radius. Then, he just measured the width of the ring and the
is

height of the cylinder and had all the information he needed. How did he do this?
Th

He wrapped the string around the different parts of the cylinder and marked the string to
find the correct spot where it is fully wrapped, then takes the string off and measures it.
