Course Outline
Introduction
Operations Management can be viewed as the management of the processes where inputs such as materials,
machines, labor and capital is transformed into value added goods and services. For majority of organizations
efficient and effective management of its operations drives their competitive strategy and long-term survival.
This course on Production and Operations management proposes to expose the students to key concepts,
tools, best practices and operational innovations so as to enable them to lead their organizational success
through design, planning, improvement, and efficient and effective execution of production and operational
processes.
1. Familiarize the students with key production and operational processes and decision making
environment.
2. Understand the strategic role of production and operations function in achieving competitive advantage.
3. Understand the key challenges of operating in a global environment.
4. Develop a systems view through understanding of the interrelationships between the production and
operations function and other business functions such as marketing, human resources, finance and
information systems etc.
5. Enable the students to analyze processes to identify key problem areas and sources of improvement.
6. Enable the students to carry out efficient and effective planning and execution of new process design
and process improvement.
7. Enable the students to apply the tools and techniques of operations management to a business situation.

The course will be delivered through lectures, class discussions, assignments, quizzes, assigned readings, films
and videos, and case studies.
In addition to the reading materials and the text book given, the students can use the IIMK digital library,
various industry databases like CMIE, authentic Internet sources, books, business magazines, interviews etc.
to gather materials for the study. For assignments the students must not prepare a voluminous document by
including write- ups from various sources but should write in their own words what they understand and the
conclusions drawn. The students should submit the document before the deadline and should be neatly typed
using MS word.
1. The students must attend all classes. For any absence on medical grounds or on official duty must be
approved.
2. All students must go through the reading materials (the main reference, the additional materials and the
cases) before coming to the class.
3. Some of the sessions will have sudden unannounced class tests and quizzes. Therefore the students are
advised to report in the class on time.
4. The students must show their understanding, innovation, and creativity while answering assignment
questions and tasks.
5. Students must comply with submission deadlines.
6. An individual student’s assignment should be his own and must not contain any copied material from
other sources. Strict disciplinary actions will be taken against any cases of plagiarism.
Group Project/Presentation
The students are supposed to take up a real life study project in groups. The project proposes to identify
operational problems that he or she faces on a regular basis and evaluate them using the tools and techniques
learned in the class. The project work may also include documentation of India-specific problems and
operational innovations that is identified by the group. Students are to form groups of 4/5 members for the
project work. Each group may discuss with the instructor the exact nature of the project work before finalizing.
Finally, each group must submit a project report.
