(Learning by doing and discovery )

Name of the Experiment: To determine the wavelength of the supplied LASER source by
diffraction grating method.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

 LASER Source
 Spectrometer
 Grating element (Here the supplied one in 2500 rulings per inch i.e. d=10160 nanometer)
 Measuring Scale

THEORY:

The angle at which interference maxima(bright fringe) occurs written by the relation.
nλ = d sinθ
Where n =Order of maxima
θ = The angle of maxima
λ = The wavelength of the LASER source used
d = Slit Spacing
For first order maxima n=1, θ=θ1 and hence eq(1) becomes
λ=d sinθ
For second order maxima n=2, θ=θ2 and hence eq(1) becomes

2λ=d sinθ2

Similarly for higher order maxima. Its important to note that for higher wavelength,
the angle of getting the maximum intensity is higher.
