IELTS Speaking Part 1

Films
1) What type of films do you like best?
To be honest, I’m quite easy-going when it comes to movies. I can watch any genre of movie as
long as they don’t involve too many violent scenes. I always have to cover my eyes at those
points! But if I had to pick only one type of movie I like best, I would have to say comedy. I love
to laugh and I find watching comedy movies always boosts my spirits, especially after a
stressful day of study.

2) Who do you usually watch films with?

A couple of years ago, I used to go to the cinema and watch movies with my group of close
friends. Unfortunately, since we graduated from university, we have our own timetables and
it’s very difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Now, I prefer watching movies
alone at home, which saves me a lot of money on movie tickets!
3) Where do you prefer to watch films - at the cinema or at home?
It depends on the type of movie. If it’s a movie that involves a lot of visual and sound effects,
such as The Hobbit, I will definitely go to the cinema and enjoy it on the big screen. But if it’s
just a normal romantic or comedy movie, I would rather stay at home and watch it by myself, I
can snuggle up on my sofa and get really comfortable.

Shopping
1) How often do you go shopping?
To be honest, I’m not mad about shopping so I don’t go very often. If there’s a special
occasion coming up like my birthday or New Year I’ll head out to the shopping mall and find a
nice dress and some matching accessories to wear for it as I do like getting dressed up. But in
general, I’m not a big shopper.
2) Do you prefer to go shopping alone?
When it comes to clothes, I much prefer to have someone with me when I shop as they can
give their opinion on the clothes I try on. Sometimes, when I’m shopping alone, I can’t decide if
the clothes I’m trying on really suit me, so I like to have someone there to give a second
opinion. It’s also good to have someone there so they can stop you from buying too much. When
I go shopping alone I often waste my money and get lots of unnecessary stuff that I’ll never
wear.
3) What do you find annoying about shopping?
The thing that annoys me most about shopping is bargaining, especially if the shop owner is
aggressive. Even to buy some everyday household goods, you have to bargain over the price
and it can be really tiresome. I wish everything had a set price so I wouldn’t have to haggle
every day. But despite this, I do still enjoy going shopping and chatting with the shopkeepers.

Hobbies
1) What hobbies do you do regularly?
In my free time, I like to do handmade crafts, such as knitting toys and making cards. I think
handmade things are much nicer than mass produced stuff as they’re unique and individual
and usually a lot of thought went into them. Many of my friends tell me all the time that I’m
very creative and have a gifted hand for making those things.
2) What benefits can people get from their hobbies?
Well… to me, it is part of you. It helps to define and create who you are. By doing that, you
connect more to your core – the real you. It is important because this world is already crazy and
I don’t want to gain the whole world but lose my soul.
3) Which new hobby would you like to try?
I could give you a really long list for this but if I had to just choose one thing to try maybe I
will go for something musical, like learning to play the guitar or some other instrument. It’s
something I’ve never tried but would love to be able to do.
