 Activity 1.
Read the dialog below

Dialog 1
Cynthia : Hi Dino, how are you? Mr. Justin said you were not in class today because you have
diarrhea. Have you taken any medicine yet?
Dino : Yes, I have. But it only helps a little.
Cynthia : Maybe you just have to take some rest in order to get well soon. Just stay in bed to let
the medicine work to ease your diarrhea
Dino : Right. In fact I’m too weak to get up. I feel very tired and sleepy. I have been to the toilet
many times today and I have lost a lot of water.
Cynthia : Poor you. You need to drink a lot of water so that you will not get dehydrated. Take
‘oralit’ salt water in order to replace the water you have lost.
Dino : Yes, I have taken I’ve sachets of ‘oralit’ since morning, and that really helps. But I only
have one sachet left.
Cynthia : Should we go to the drug store and buy some for you?
Dino : That’s a good idea. The closest drug store is quite far from here.

Kata kata bercetak tebal yang terdapat pada dialog di atas merupakan kata kata yang biasa digunakan
ketika menyatakan “purpose or intention to do something”

 Activity 2.
Definition:
Purpose or Intention to do something: is the expression used to express or say our goal, purpose, or plans

. Untuk menyatakan tujuan atau keinginan kita dapat menggunakan:

1) In order to (supaya/agar) setelah frasa ini biasanya diikuti kata kerja (verb) atau be untuk
nominal sentence.
Contoh:
i. In order to be happy, we should live simply.
ii. We can swim in order to have strong muscles
2) So that (sehingga). Setelah frasa ini biasanya diikuti oleh subjek.
Contoh:
i. We should study hard so that we can pass the exams.
ii. We have to do warming up before doing exercise so that we don’t get muscle injury.

3) To (untuk/supaya) to biasanya diikuti verb atau be.

Contoh:
i. We should jog to have stronger lungs.
ii. To be successful, we must work harder.

Penjelasan tambahan:
 Untuk mengekspresikan suatu tujuan dalam kalimat Bahasa Inggris, kita dapat menggunakan “so
that” atau “in order to”. Keduanya memilki arti yang sama
Contoh:
 I turned off the TV in order to enable my roommate to study in peace and quiet.
 I turned off the TV so that my roommate could study in peace and quiet.

In oder to dan so that sama-sama digunakan untuk menyatakan tujuan. Pada contoh kalimat
diatas, “I turned off the TV” untuk suatu tujuan. Tujuannya adalah: “make it possible for my
roommate to study in peace and quiet”

 Activity 3.
Exercises:
I. There are some situations where Lennon, Krisna, Indah, and Cici talk and ask what to do and what
not to do. Think of what you would say if you were them, and put it to complete the sentences below.
(perhatikan penggunaan in order, so that, dan to.)

Example:
Krisna, Indah, and Cici are in the classroom. They see some trash around.
Krisna : “Look! The trash is everywhere. The classroom is very dirty.”
Indah : “____________________________________________.” (What to do)
Cici: “________________________________________.” (What not to do)

Answer:
Krisna : “Look! The trash is everywhere. The classroom is very dirty.”
Indah : “Pick up the trash and put them in the bin so that the class is clean.” (What to do)
Cici : “Don’t burn the trash, in order to save the air from pollution.” (What not to do)

1) Situation 1: Lenon, Indah, and Krisna are going to have a fag ceremony in their school.
Lenon : “It’s nearly 7 o’clock now. Remember, we have a flag ceremony today.”

2) Situation 2: Cici, Lenon, and Indah are sitting in the canteen during the break to have their lunch.
Cici : “I’m very hungry, let’s get something for lunch.”

3) Situation 3: Class is over now. Krisna, Cici, and Lenon are going home.
Krisna : “Well friends, it’s time to go home.”

Kalimat yang bercetak tebal yang terdapat pada dialog di atas merupakan kalimat yang menyatakan
ungkapan “agree or disagree with a suggestion or an idea”

 Activity 5.
Definition:
Expressing agreement/agree berarti mengungkapkan persetujuan akan suatu hal.
Sedangkan Expressing disagreement/disagree berarti mengungkapkan ketidaksetujuan terhadap suatu hal.

Di bawah ini adalah beberapa ungkapan yang bias digunakan untuk mengungkapkan persetujuan dan
ketidaksetujuan dalam bahasa inggris.
