PSYCH 704 Advanced Theories of Personality

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to review the different theories of personality. This survey of the
perspectives in personality development will be relevant in the students’ establishment of own
theoretical view of human behavior and attitudes, in the student’s acquisition of approach in the
practice of the profession, and the students’ formulation of research studies in the field of
psychology
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the graduate students will be able to:
1. Identify and describe the major personality theories and its proponents
2. Critically evaluate the applicability of the theories to the Filipino culture
3. Demonstrate and apply the different personality theories in analyzing clients
Grading System:
Pre-recorded Report 10%
Case Conceptualization and Presentation 50%
Case Critique 20%
Final Exam 20%
Total 100%

Course Requirements:
1. Pre-recorded Report
Students will be assigned specific Personality theories to report on. It should be
prerecorded and must be uploaded as a video file. Office 365, made available for free
for AdDU students, allows video and audio recordings. Students may also opt for
screen recordings using the webcam of their laptops. The report should be presented
creatively without taking away what is discussed in the book. It is recommended that
critique and comparison with other theories and the applicability of the approach to the
Filipino context be included.
2. Case Conceptualization
The cases will be about a close friend or family member, or client. Life story and other
details should be assessed enough to analyze his personality. Informed consent,
confidentiality regarding identifying information, and citation of references must be
observed.

1. Identifying information (Please keep the actual name of your client confidential.)
2. Relevant Personal History
3. Relevant Family History
4. Case Conceptualization based on the theory of choice
3. Case Conceptualization Critique
Each student is required to critique one case conceptualization posted by other
classmates. The critiquing student may agree or disagree with the theoretical lens that
the student presenter used to analyze his/her case. He/ she must offer an alternative
point of view in the case conceptualization. A case can only be critiqued by one adult
learner.
Tips in writing the critique:
1. Read the case and list down pertinent information that was not included in the
presentation.
2. Determine an alternative lens to use in explaining the behavior of the client.
3. Formulate the case conceptualization based on your theory of choice.
