Place Value
What to learn?
Digits are mathematical symbols that are arranged in a specific order to represent
numeric values. There are ten different digits in our number system. They are listed below.

We use these ten digits (or ten symbols) to create numbers by placing them in a
specific order. It is the position of each digit within a number that determines its place value.
One digit alone can also represent a number. A single digit that represents a number is said
to be in the ones place value position.
We will now look at a whole number with four full periods. The name of each period as
well as the place value of each digit is labeled. Can you see a pattern in the diagram below?
Next we have a number that has digits to the right of the decimal point. Be sure to
again look for a pattern by imagining the ones place as the middle of the number.
Can you see the pattern that is mirrored about the ones place? Once we learn how to
identify the place value of digits, we then can learn how to read and write numbers properly.

What to Learn?
Every number can be written with either digits or words. Number words are the
alphabetical form of numbers. As the name suggests, these are numbers written in words.

5 Five 10 Ten
With the help of the number words from one to ten, we can make number words of
higher value. It is important to learn every number word from One to Twenty to learn other
number words. Also, the number words from eleven to twenty are very different from other
number words.

After learning the number words up to twenty, it is important to learn the number
words such as thirty, forty, fifty, sixty until hundred.

It becomes easy to convert numbers to number words and number words to number
if we know the number words and their place value. To write a number in words, write the
number in each period followed by the name of the period without the ‘s’ at the end.
Name a whole number in words
1. Starting at the digit on the left, name the number in each period, followed by the
period name. Do not include the period name for the ones.
2. Use commas in the number to separate the periods.
Examples
37, 519, 248 is written as “Thirty-seven million, five hundred thousand, two
hundred forty-eight”.
8, 165, 432, 098, 710 is written as “ Eight trillion, one hundred sixty-five million,
four hundred thirty-two thousand, seven hudred ten”.

Writing Time
What to Learn?
The concept of reading time practice learners in their skills to count by five. The
concept of elapsed time uses to analyze word problems involving addition and subtraction.
Hence, the concept of reading time develops a variety of cognitive skills.
Analog clock - a clock with moving hands, a minute hand and a hour hand. Some analog
clocks might also have a second hand. The second hand moves one tick every second
(remember there are 60 seconds in a minute)
