Other Application of Nanotechnology

An application of Nanotechnology in various fields such as health and medicine,

electronics, energy and environment, is discussed in detail. Applications of nanoparticles in
drug delivery, protein and peptide delivery, cancer are explained. Applications of various nano
systems in cancer therapy such as carbon nanotube, dendrimers, nanocrystal, nanowire,
nano shells etc. are given. The advancement in nanotechnology helps in the treatment of
neuro- degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Applications of nanotechnology in tuberculosis treatment, the clinical application of
nanotechnology in operative dentistry, in ophthalmology, in surgery, visualization, tissue
engineering, antibiotic resistance, immune response

Learning Activity
Answer the following questions briefly:

1. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of nanomaterials.

2. What likely are the impacts of nanotechnology?
3. How can nanotechnology address the problems in the environment?

MODULE 10
BIODIVERSITY AND HEALTHY SOCIETY

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define biodiversity and its importance
2. Explain the major threats to biodiversity.
3. Determine the interrelatedness of society, environment and health

The Philippine Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of different forms of life on earth, including the different
plants, animals, micro-organisms, the genes they contain and the ecosystem they form. It
refers to genetic variation, ecosystem variation, species variation (number of species) within
an area, biome or planet. Relative to the range of habitats, biotic communities and ecological
processes in the biosphere, biodiversity is vital in a number of ways including promoting the
aesthetic value of the natural environment, contribution to our material well-being through
utilitarian values by providing food, fodder, fuel, timber and medicine.
