Activity 1: Cause and Effect

DIRECTION: Make a infographics about the cause and effect of estuaries and intertidal zones. Explain
your infographic in 100 words.

Because they are transitional areas between the

land and the sea, and between freshwater and
saltwater environments, estuaries can be
seriously impacted by any number of human or
any activities. Poor water
quality affects most estuarine organisms,
including commercially important fish and
shellfish. The pollutants that have the
greatest impact on the health
of estuaries include toxic substances like
chemicals and heavy metals, nutrient pollution
(or eutrophication), and pathogens such as
bacteria or viruses.

ACTIVITY 2: ESSAY

DIRECTION: Answer the following questions based on your understanding of the lesson.

1. What are the major causes of environmental destruction in the estuaries and intertidal zones.

- The two main problems affecting estuaries are sedimentation and pollution from run-off. Sea level rise,
erosion, strengthening storms, ocean acidification and rising temperatures are just some of the threats
facing coastal and intertidal zones

2. What are the effects of damaged estuaries ad intertidal zones?

- Industries like fishing and oyster farming can impact the water quality and also the movement of water
in estuaries. Over-fishing and habitat loss reduces the amount of fish in the ocean and disrupts the food
chain.

3. What are the reasons why we need to protect and conserve estuaries and intertidal zones.

- Estuaries support a diversity of species of fish, shellfish, aquatic plants and animals. The protected
waters provide vital nesting, breeding and feeding habitats for many species. Estuaries also filter
pollutants out of the water flowing through them, including pesticides, herbicides and heavy metals.

ACTIVITY 3: Inter-active Games

DIRECTION: Among the interactive sites and games being mention in the USTeP, which one interest you
the most? Please briefly explain your answer in the box provided below.

This game finds me interesting because it

gives the looks of having a national
geographic site that gives more knowledge
on things to the learners.
ACTIVITY 4: Share best practice

DIRECTION: Share your best practice in explaining your lesson about estuaries and intertidal zones.
You include pictures, mechanics and even the website in which the teacher can follow.

So far as a Grade 4 teacher, I’ve never explained or teach these lessons to my students since I
believe that this topic belongs to a Grade 5 lesson. But for me If I were given a chance to teach
these lessons, I will take this opportunity and knowledge that is being shared to us to deliver to
the students who finds interested in this matter.
