Proposed Title MATHEMATICS TEACHING MODALITY UNDER A QUARANTINED

COMMUNITY: AN ACTION RESEARCH

Author’s Name Engr. Rubilyn Barrios, LPT, ChE, MAEd Mathematics

Chapter 1
Introduction Many strategies were already made for teaching Mathematics to make
the delivery of lessons easier but the greatest challenge I encountered was
during the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic. Since the said pandemic
resulted to public health emergency, flexible learning is sought to continue
teaching and learning beyond the usual face-to-face instruction (CHED
Memorandum Order No. 04, Series of 2020).

Purpose of the Study My focus was in the introduction of Small Group Discussion teaching modality
as additional mode of instruction to Bachelor in Secondary Education major in
Mathematics students.
Significance of the Study The necessity to take action on the plight of the students to lessen their agony
and anxiety towards the new normal in education prompt me to do this research.

Identified Problem The primary considerations must be on the learners’ side. They had been crying
out for difficulty in learning with the new normal way of delivering lessons.
The presence of super highway internet is supposed to be of great help to them
but for several reasons, struggles were encountered upon the implementation. I
have to find alternatives to deliver the lessons the best possible way.

Theoretical Framework
Chapter 2
METHOD

Action To be Taken The new learning modality of instruction that I will try, other than the
Synchronous and Asynchronous modes, will be the Small Group Discussion
(SGD). This happened after hearing the plea of my students on their difficulty
for particular lessons in Calculus. With the intermittent internet connections and
the costly data for viewing videos or Facebook live, we opted in trying the new
mode. The class will be categorized according to their residences. Each group
will select one representative to join the Small Group Discussion with the
instructor. The said representative will report back to his/her group. The
representative will then perform another Small Group Discussion with the rest
of the members echoing the discussion of the instructor. In case that the
representative will forget a portion of the discussion, a video taken during the
SGD with the instructor will serve as back up. It can also be utilized for those
who can’t join the SGD like locally stranded student.
