Unit 3

Lesson1. GENERAL METHODS OF TEACHING SCIENCE

Exercise:

Task 1.

1. Give any four merits of lecture method.

 Lectures can present material not otherwise available to students.

 Lectures can be specifically organized to meet the needs of particular audiences.
 Lectures can present large amounts of information.
 Lectures can be presented to large audiences.

2. What are information cards? What sort of information do they contain?

- Information cards are personal digital identities that people can use online, and the key component of an
identity metasystem. Visually, each i-card has a card-shaped picture and a card name associated with it
that enable people to organize their digital identities and to easily select one they want to use for any
given interaction.

3. What are the objectives of assignments?

- An assignment should help the students to imbibe the scientific attitudes and should provide the training
in scientific method. The students should develop interest in further study of science by introducing new
and wider avenues of study. It should help a student to discover facts of science so that he may weave
them into appropriate concepts and principles.

4. Discussion method and project method are best suited for a class having many brilliant students-Justify.

- Discussion is important to learning in all disciplines because it helps students process information rather
than simply receive it. Leading a discussion requires skills different from lecturing. The goal of a
discussion is to get students to practice thinking about the course material. The main idea of project
teaching method is an opportunity for the students to self-study, to show their knowledge, and their
scientific practical abilities. It plays a crucial role in forming the competitive person, which answers all
requirements of modern society.

5. Mention the limitations of CAI.

1. The chief limitation lies in the cost that it claims.

2. Computers may also inject a non-human quality into educational programs.
3. Hence the teaching-learning process itself might go as a mechanized process.
4. Further, all individualized instruction and CAI instruct the students in such away, that all will achieve
the same level of mastery.

Lesson 2. Technology Application in Teaching Science

Exercise/Drill:

Task 2:

1. Other than writing, for what purposes is a chalkboard used?

 A framework of the lecture may be set out on the board and can then be filled in during the class.
 It provides a means of progressing from simple to complex ideas and developing each explanation
point by point.
 Diagrams, symbols, charts and even more complicated drawings can be added in chalkboard.

2. Mention any three importance of A.V aids.

 Best motivators
- They are the best motivators. The students work with more interest and zeal. They are more
attentive.
 Helpful in fixing up new learning
- What is gained in terms of learning needs to be fixed up in the minds of students. Audio-Visual aids
help in achieving this objective by providing several activities, experiences and stimuli to the learners.
 Encouragement to healthy classroom interaction
- AV aids, through their wide variety of stimuli, provision of active participation of the students, and
vicarious experiences encourage healthy classroom interaction for the effective realization of
teaching-learning objectives.
3. Write any four essential qualities of A.V aids.

1. Accurate

- If the aid is the actual object then it is very essential that it is accurate in its representation.

2. Relevant

- The aid should be relevant and directly related to the subject matter. The aid should be accurate in detail,
understandable and interesting and it is of little value if it is irrelevant.

3. Realistic

- Aid may be anything from crude diagram to an actual object .But if it seems to be realistic, its value
increases. It has been said that visual aids have value in proportion to the degree of realization.

4. Simple

- The aids should not be overcrowded; use of many aids may confuse the students.
Lesson 3. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN SCIENCE

Exercise/Drill:

Task 3:

“A teaching aid, however good it may be, cannot replace teacher”- Discuss.

- It is much obvious that technology is assisting students in their learning and it is playing a crucial role in
the field of education. But, as of now, it does not have the power to replace teachers because human
interaction cannot be replaced by computers and human skills cannot be taught by technology. It is
important also to note that, while technology will not replace teachers, in places where there are currently
no teachers, or where there are not sufficient numbers of capable teachers, technology can play a vital role
in providing access to educational resources and opportunities for learners that are otherwise. Technology
help the process of learning, but it certainly cannot replace the role of the teacher, and it can never replace
the emotional support that teachers provide. Teachers are lifelong learners who continue to learn and
grow throughout their careers. They are constantly adapting to new situations and the needs of their
students. Technology can't provide the same level of support that teachers can.

UNIT ASSESSMENT:

Lesson 1: Methods of Teaching Science

Identify at least 5 science topics and determine the appropriate teaching method that may be used in
teaching the topic.

Science Topics Appropriate Teaching Method

Biology Discussion Method

Chemistry Laboratory Method

Physic Scientific Method

Computer Science Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI)

Geology Heuristic Method

Lesson 2: Technology Application in Teaching Science

Choose 1 science topic and create a visual aid (of your choice) on how the subject should be taught. Make
a short video presentation of your work (for online) or prepare for your work to be presented in class (if
face to face classes will be implemented).

Lesson 3. Information and Communication Technology in Science

Reflection Paper: Role of Internet in Teaching

Research on any article that talks about the role of internet in science teaching and submit a reflection
paper about it.

Reflection:

The use of internet for education helps to streamline the sharing of information and communication. It lets
students access lectures online and refer to relevant study material in various multimedia formats. It also
helps teachers by letting them use various tools in their curriculum. People use the internet extensively to
learn about science, for research, homework, satisfying curiosity, and looking for evidence about
scientific propositions. In science making research was difficult but using internet it can give us many
information on how to make it easier. Learning was never this much of fun until technology decided to
mingle with science and create a revolution. It helped the young minds nurture the best in the world. The
online science communities helped them grow without a fail, and provide them with all the knowledge
they had always dreamt of gaining. Technology and science have together created an easy world for both
the students and teachers, allowing them to ensure what we call two-way learning. So that’s what happens
when the internet combines with science, they make sure that education is being attained with ease.
