orchard (n) /ˈɔːtʃəd/

resort to something : to make use of something, especially something bad, as a


means of achieving something, often because there is no other possible solution
Ex: They felt obliged to resort to violence.
= have recourse to something : the fact of having to, or being able to, use
something that can provide help in a difficult situation
Ex: The government, when necessary, has recourse to the armed forces.

resolve (v): to find an acceptable solution to a problem or difficulty = settle

exert something: to use power or influence to affect somebody/something

inclined to agree, believe, think, etc. : used when you are expressing an
opinion but do not want to express it very strongly
 Ex: I'm inclined to agree with you.

1. difficult or impossible to control
o Ex: Unemployment is getting out of hand.
2. if you reject, etc. something out of hand, you do so immediately without
thinking about it fully or listening to other people’s arguments
o Ex: All our suggestions were dismissed out of hand.

in hand
1. if you have time or money in hand, it is left and available to be used
o Ex: We managed to redecorate the house and still have some
savings in hand.
o Ex: She completed the first part of the exam with over an hour in
hand.
2. if you have a particular situation in hand, you are in control of it
o Ex: Don’t worry about the travel arrangements—everything is in
hand.

on hand : available, especially to help


o Ex: The emergency services were on hand with medical advice.

at hand: near in time or position


Ex: We want to ensure that help is at hand (= easily available) for all
children suffering abuse.
give off something : to produce something such as a smell, heat, light, etc.
o Ex: The flowers gave off a fragrant perfume.
o Ex: The fire doesn't seem to be giving off much heat.

give out something : to produce something such as heat, light, etc.


o Ex: The radiator gives out a lot of heat.

anxious to do sth: want something very much


 Ex: She was anxious to finish school and get a job.
 Ex: He was anxious not to be misunderstood.

potential (n): qualities that exist and can be developed


 Ex: All children should be encouraged to realize their full potential.
 to reach/ fulfil/ achieve your potential

aptitude (n): natural ability or skill at doing something = talent

surveillance (n): the act of carefully watching a person suspected of a crime or a


place where a crime may be committed = observation
 Ex: The police are keeping the suspects under constant surveillance.

lend colour to something (idiom)


(formal) to make something seem true or likely
o Ex: Most of the available evidence lends colour to this view.
