Lesson/Date: Estimating Differences (Rounding)/Dec. 10, 2020

Time: 8:28-9:10 a.m.

Stage 1: Desired Results

Lesson This lesson will introduce grade 4 students to estimating differences by subtracting 4-digit
Overview: numbers with 3- and 4-digit numbers. The purpose of this lesson is to have students correctly
estimate differences involving a 4-digit and 3-/4-digit numbers. In addition, students will solve
word problems using estimation strategies. Direct instruction will be used in activity one to
ensure students acquire the proper foundational skills used to estimate differences. By the end
of the lesson students will be able to confidently and correctly estimate differences to the
nearest tenth or hundredth. By having this skill students will be able to determine if their
subtraction gives them a reasonable answer.
GLO: Students will:
- Develop number sense.
SLOs: Students will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of addition of numbers with answers to 10 000 and
their corresponding subtractions (3- and 4-digit numerals).
- Estimate differences.
Learning Students will:
Objectives - Understand place value.
a. Correctly write down 4-digit numbers so ones, tens, hundreds, and
thousands columns align.
- Demonstrate how to round numbers to the nearest tenth and hundredth.
- Confidentially and correctly add 4-digit numbers with 3- and 4-digit numbers that give
answers up to 10 000.
- Demonstrate how to correctly solve addition problems that involve regrouping.
a. One regrouping.
b. Two regroupings.
c. Three regroupings.

What does the word difference mean?
How do you think estimating a difference is like estimating a sum?

When we estimate a difference, we find a number that is close to the

difference. We estimate to make sure that the answer to our subtraction
question makes sense.
