END SEMESTER EXAMINATION - JAN. 2020 SESSION

PROG./DEPARTMENT : B.Tech. /Chemical Engineering

DATE & TIME OF EXAM : 04.08.2020

SUB CODE : CLPC24 Equilibrium Staged Operations

DURATION : 120 Min.
FACULTY NAME : Dr.K.M.Meera Sheriffa Begum

Note to Student:
1. Make sure the ‘Declaration and statement of authorship’ is uploaded along
with the answer sheet as cover sheet (First Sheet)
2. TIME MANAGEMENT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

Note : 1. Answer All Questions (QP SET IV)

2.Any missing data may be suitably assumed
3. Solve Problems Analytically

1. A binary feed mixture of 350 kmol/h containing 60 mole % A and 40 mole % B is separated
in a distillation column to yield a distillate of 150 kmol/h containing 96 mole % A as the top
product and 2 mol% A in bottom product. The reflux ratio employed is 3.5, The following
concentrations in the stripping section have been measured by analysing the liquid and vapour
samples around the 7th tray: x7 = 0.25, y7 = 0.41, y8 = 0.33. (a) What is the feed quality? (b)
Find vapor boil up raio. (6)

2. For distillation of an equimolar binary mixture of A and B, the equations of the operating lines
are:
Rectifying section: y = 0.663x + 0.32
Stripping Section: y = 1.329x – 0.01317
What is the condition of the feed ? (3)

3. A liquid mixture containing 65 mol % benzene and 35 mol % toluene is subjected to flash
vaporisation at 363 K and 101.3 kPa. The vapour pressure of benzene at this temperature is
136.09 kPa and the vapour pressure of toluene is 54.21 kPa. Flash vaporisation is essentially
an equilibrium stage operation. Calculate (a) The exit liquid composition (b) The exit vapour
composition at 38% of feed liquid vaporised. (3)

4. A solute is recovered from 1 kg aqueous solution containing 20% solute by weight using
kerosene as solvent. The equilibrium relation is described by X = 6.45 Y, where X is kg solute
per kg water and Y is kg solute per kg kerosene. Calculate (a) the final raffinate concentration
if the extraction is done in 3 simple equilibrium contacts using 5 kg solvent per kg of initial
solution in each stage (b) the number of equivalent theoretical contacts necessary to obtain
the final raffinate concentration as 3.5% by weight in a counter-current mode using 6 kg
kerosene per kg of feed. (6)

5. Phenol present in an aqueous solution is to be removed by adsorption with activated carbon.

The initial concentration of phenol in the solution is 0.25 kg per m3. 4 kg activated carbon is
added to 3 m3 of the solution and mixed thoroughly till equilibrium is attained. Adsorption
equilibrium is represented by Freundlich's isotherm q =0.20 C0.23 where q is adsorbate loading,
kg phenol/kg carbon and C is the concentration, kg phenol/m3 of solution. Calculate (a) The
equilibrium concentration of the solution and the corresponding adsorbate loading. (b) The
percent of phenol extracted. (6)

6. Explain the design procedure of multistage countercurrent leaching operation from

fundamentals with neat layout. (6)
