Module 2: Skills Involve in Festival Dance!

Most people nowadays, young and old alike, are becoming fitness conscious as
one of their goals in life. Most of you consider physical fitness as part of your daily
activities to help you accomplish your daily tasks with ease, endurance and
satisfaction. Moreover, physical activities like dancing, brisk walking, jogging, etc., are
exercises that are fun to perform with other people and can be done anytime
depending on the availability, fitness and readiness of a person.

Philippines is known for its beauty and hospitality. As you reach the different
parts of the country, you will discover the different cultures and pride of every region
and province. Festival dances are very popular to celebrate thanksgiving and honor in
every region and province.

In this lesson, you will learn about the skills involved in Philippine Festival
Dances.

What I Need to Know

We, Filipinos in general, are noted to be among the fun-loving and health
conscious people in the world. Physical fitness activities are performed in colorful
festivals and street dances which highlight a year round celebration all over the
country. The people move and dance with the beat of the percussive instruments to
participate.
Festival dances are performed by people of various walks of life for
entertainment, fun, and merrymaking purposes giving premium to personal fitness plus
the victory of winning a competition.

After reading this module, you should be able to execute the skills involved in the
dance.

Specifically, you are expected to:

1. discuss the skills involved in the festival dance;


2. execute the skills involved in the festival dances;
3. recognize the importance of festival dance through creating a dance
combination steps for street dance.

In going through the module, you have to extend your patience in


understanding, analyzing what you are reading. Follow the directions. Answer the
entire given tests and exercises carefully. Comply the required activities provided.

What is it?

Read and Understand


Physical activity is a bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles. It requires
energy expenditure and produces progressive health benefits. Physical fitness
activities are performed in colorful festivals and street dances which highlight a year
round celebration all over the country. These festival dances require the basic
fundamental skills in performing.

A. Locomotor Skills

These are movements that allow us to move from one point in space to another.
It is canned from two words “locos” which means place, and “motor”, which means
movement.
They include the following:

1. Step - The transfer of weight from one foot to the other.

B. Non-Locomotor Skills

These are movements performed in one point in space without transferring the
weight to another point. They should allow you to move from one place to the other.
These movements include:

Basic Step No. 5: Step both feet sideward to the right with arms flexing sideward
(counts 1, 2, 3, 4) and left (counts 5, 6, 7, 8)… ............ (16 counts)

Basic Step No. 6: Turn clockwise to the right and place right arms extending
upward and left arms flexing upward pointing to the side and
shout “Viva!’ (counts 1, 2, 3, 4) and turn counter clockwise to the
left place left arms extending upward and right arms flexing
upward pointing to the side and shout “Pit Senior!” (counts 5, 6,

The basic steps can be repeated depending on the choreography of the dance.
But the dance steps of Sinulog nowadays is being modernized to be more energetic
and merrier to see. Adding hand movements and other locomotor and non-locomotor
skills are being utilized for street dances and competitions as long as the essence of
the basic skills are being seen in the presentation. The use of props is also very well
known in the festival to add more value of the story being portrayed behind the dance.

skills for street dance presentation.
2. Use any available percussion instruments (Example: drums, cymbals, bells,

your family members or friends.
