BSCE-2C ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS

ASSIGNMENT:

Given the table above find the following by performing a multiple regression analysis using the
Excel Data Analysis Add-in:
1. The least-squares regression equation
2. Coefficient of multiple determination (𝑅 2 )
3. Determine whether the t-statistics for HH SIZE and CUBED HH SIZE are statistically
significant at the 0.05 level.
SUMMARY OUTPUT:

1. LEAST-SQUARES REGRESSION EQUATION:

ŷ = 𝒃𝟎 + 𝒃𝟏 𝒙 𝟏 + 𝒃𝟐 𝒙𝟐
Where: Coefficients
Intercept 0.89655172 𝑏0
𝑥1 HH SIZE 0.33646813 𝑏1
𝑥2 CUBED HH SIZE 0.00208986 𝑏2

The Equation is:

ŷ = 𝟎. 𝟖𝟗𝟔𝟓𝟓𝟏𝟕𝟐 + 𝟎. 𝟑𝟑𝟔𝟒𝟔𝟖𝟏𝟑ሺ𝑯𝑯 𝑺𝑰𝒁𝑬ሻ + 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟐𝟎𝟖𝟗𝟖𝟔ሺ𝐂𝐔𝐁𝐄𝐃 𝐇𝐇 𝐒𝐈𝐙𝐄ሻ

2. COEFFICIENT OF MULTIPLE DETERMINATION (𝑹𝟐 )

- In the summary output:
Regression Statistics
Multiple R
R Square
0.89582802
0.80250784
𝑹𝟐 = 0.80250784
- This means 80.25% of the car’s variation can be explained by the HH SIZE and by the CUBED
HH SIZE of the cars.
3. DETERMINE WHETHER THE T-STATISTICS FOR HH SIZE AND CUBED HH
SIZE ARE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT AT THE 0.05 LEVEL.

Coefficients Standard Error t Stat P-value

Intercept 0.89655172 0.764398064 1.172886 0.361624
HH SIZE 0.33646813 0.422703764 0.79599 0.509507
CUBED HH SIZE 0.00208986 0.013113794 0.159364 0.888021

- For the HH SIZE, it has an estimated standard error of 0.0422703764, has a P-value of
0.509507, and its T-Stat is 0.7960, therefore since the P-value of the HH SIZE is greater
than 0.05, it is statistically insignificant at significant level 0.05.
- For the HH CUBED SIZE, it has an estimated standard error of 0.013113794, has a P-value
of 0.0.888021, and its T-Stat is 0.159364, therefore since the P-value of the CUBED HH
SIZE is greater than 0.05, it is statistically insignificant at significant level 0.05.
