Subject: Chemistry

Q. no.
Q1. Define the following terms :- (Or text book definitions)
i. Synthesis / Combination reaction
A synthesis or combination reaction is one in which simpler
substances react to give complex compound as the product.
ii. Double decomposition reaction
It is a reaction in which solutions of 2 compounds react in such a
way that the +ve radical of one combines with the –ve radical of the
other to form 2 new compounds.
iii. Precipitation reaction
A precipitation reaction is one in which two compounds in their
solution form undergo a double decomposition reaction such that
one of the products formed is insoluble and forms the precipitate.

Q2. State the kind of reaction represented by each of the following :

i. AL + X AX + L
Displacement
ii. 4 HNO 3 4NO 2 + 2H 2 O +O 2
Thermal Decomposition
iii. CaCO 3 + H 2 O + CO 2 Ca(HCO 3 ) 2
Synthesis/Combination
iv. FeSO 4 + 2 NaOH Fe (OH ) 2 +Na 2 SO 4
Precipitation
v. BaCl 2 + H 2 SO 4 BaSO 4 + 2 HCl
Double decomposition

Q. 3 Write the required equation and your observation when:

i. A piece of zinc is dropped in copper sulphate solution
Equation : Zn + CuSO 4 ZnSO 4 + Cu
Observation : 1. Blue colour of solution fades
2. Reddish brown deposits are seen
ii. Copper chloride and sodium hydroxide react and one of the
products is a ppt.
CuCl 2 + 2 NaOH Cu (OH ) 2 ↓ + 2 NaCl
Observation : Blue ppt is seen.
iii. A ppt is obtained when dil sulphuric acid is added to lime
water
Ca(OH) 2 + H 2 SO 4 CaSO 4 + H 2 O
Observation : Milky white ppt seen
