2. Grammar clues.
2.1. Gerunds and infinitives
Consider the following:

 Infinitives and gerunds may function as subjects, objects and subject complements
in sentences.

Example:

Saving money every month is such a good thing to do. (Subject)

They tried climbing up the mountain but they got tired halfway. (Direct object of
a verb)

Her main concern is to improve her English level. (Subject complement)

 Prepositions can be followed by gerunds, NOT BY INFINITIVES.

Example:

I dreamt about winning a gold medal in the Olympics.

 Adjectives can be followed by infinitives, NOT BY GERUNDS.

Example:

He’s too old to go to university.

It’s difficult to live away from your loved ones.

 Some verbs can be followed directly by an infinitive. They can be used with or
without a noun/pronoun object before the infinitive, depending on the meaning.
Some of these verbs are: wWant, need, tell, ask, allow, invite, expect, encourage, etc.

Example:
I need to call the plumber.

I need my roommate to call the plumber.

4. Clues in context.

When it comes to personality traits, some

people are really outgoing, so sharing

personal information (shortly after

meeting someone) is not difficult for

them. Mom has always told me to be

reserved and consider carefully what I’m
going to say. She says that trusting a
person immediately is not a good thing
to do. I generally avoid talking so much

about me. Instead, I allow the other

people to talk as much as they want. By

doing this, I also look modest and

considerate.

5. Use the clues.

Complete the following questions with the appropriate form of the verb in brackets. Then,
write an answer for each of them.
