Sri Lanka to begin vaccination of 60+ and 30-to-60-year-old workforce early March
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will begin vaccinating people over the age of 60 and those in the workforce aged
between 30 and 60 against COVID-19 in the first week of March, State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle said. The
State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control told reporters today that various
industries have requested the vaccine from the government. Sri Lanka will also likely inoculate doctors and frontline
workers in the private health sector, she said .Over 160,000 frontline workers in the state sector including military
personnel have received the India-donated Oxford-AstraZeneca-Covishield vaccine so far, Fernandopulle said, with a
consignment of vaccines expected to arrive early March through the COVAX facility.
Sri Lanka does well on human and economic development relative to environmental damage
Sri Lanka is ranked top among the countries in Asia, which have achieved human and economic development relative
to the damage done to their environment and the climate. According to a United Nations Development
Programme’s (UNDP) Planetary-pressures adjusted Human Development Index (PHDI), Sri Lanka is ranked second
best in Asia after Japan for doing good on human development in relation to the impacts on the climate and the
environment. In addition to the human development, it also looks at the regular measures of development such as
economic growth, education and health. Sri Lanka has scored little over 0.75 compared to Japan’s nearly 0.80 score
in UNDP’s latest PHDI.
Prime lending rate hits new low despite rate hike expectations
Daily Mirror- The prime lending rate or the benchmark rate at which most prime customers of banks get their loan
facilities approved— mostly for shorter tenors—touched a fresh low last week despite speculation that the
prevailing lower rates environment would end towards the second quarter of this year. According to the latest data
available through last Friday, the average weighted prime lending rate (AWPLR) fell by 31 basis points (bps) to 5.59
percent, declining below the previous lowest of 5.66 percent as of December 11, 2020. However, there is growing
chorus by a section of economists and analysts that the current downturn in interest rates would end its run as early
as June this year amid pressure on the rupee due to weak inflows by way of imports and outflows as foreign loan
settlements.

Asian shares, oil buoyant on economic revival hopes
(Reuters) - Asian shares hovered near record highs on Monday while oil surpassed $60 a barrel on hopes a $1.9
trillion COVID-19 aid package will be passed by U.S. lawmakers as soon as this month just as coronavirus vaccines are
being rolled out globally.
In a sign Europe and U.S. markets would start strong, eurostoxx futures and Germany’s DAX rose 0.7% each, while
London’s FTSE futures added 0.6%. E-mini futures for the S&P 500 were up 0.4% in early Asian trading. The mood was
upbeat in Asia with all major indexes clocking gains. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose
0.5% to 721.11, not far from an all-time high of 730.16 touched late last month. Japan’s Nikkei jumped about 2% while
Australian shares ended 0.6% higher. Chinese shares advanced with the blue-chip CSI300 index up 1.3%.
Hopes of a quicker economic revival and supply curbs by producer group OPEC and its allies pushed oil to its highest
level in a year as it crossed $60 a barrel. [O/R]
On Friday, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 hit all-time highs on stronger-than-expected corporate results in the fourth
quarter and as companies were on track to post earnings growth for the first quarter instead of a decline. The rallies
came even as U.S. data painted a dour picture of the country’s labour market with payrolls rising by 49,000, half of
what economists were expecting. The weak report spurred the push for more stimulus, underscoring the need for
lawmakers to act on President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package. Biden and his Democratic allies in
Congress forged ahead with their stimulus plan on Friday as lawmakers approved a budget outline that will allow
them to muscle through in the coming weeks without Republican support. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen
predicted the United States would hit full employment next year if Congress can pass its support package.
Indeed, the greenback came off a four-month high against the Japanese yen to be last at 105.50. The euro was a tad
weaker at $1.2036 after rising 0.7% on Friday to a one-week high. The risk-sensitive Australian dollar eased from a
one-week high to $0.7675.
In commodities, Brent crude and U.S. crude climbed 59 cents each to $59.93 and $0.57.44, respectively. U.S. gold
futures were up 0.1% at $1,815.4 an ounce.
