Experiment – 1: performance analysis of a single-phase half-wave & full-wave uncontrolled rectifier

Objective:

1. Understand and learn how diode characteristics are used to rectify AC voltage to DC voltage. 2. Learn
the advantages of full-wave rectifiers over half-wave rectifiers.

3. Learn the disadvantages of uncontrolled rectifiers.

Theory:

A single-phase half-wave rectifier is shown in Figure 1-1. In the case of using load resistance (R), the output
waveform can be shown as in Figure l -2 (a). When the power supply voltage is in the positive part, current
cannot pass through the diode, and the diode is isolated with the power supply therefore the positive part
of the power supply becomes load voltage.

The load voltage Vab is given by the equation:

Discussion: Here, we have found single-phase half-wave & full-wave uncontrolled rectifier in PSIM. As a
result, we have been able to make a beautiful visual by the circuit diagram. Therefore, our diagram of any
math will be easy to solve.
