SUMMARY:

This project is part of the many ongoing projects under taken at the Animal
Biotechnology Laboratory of National Institute of Biotechnology. This project is
part of proposal planning by BAS-USDA-PLAS. The main aim of the project is to
isolate DNA from blood, hair follicles and meat tissue samples of different types of
cattle- goat, cow and buffalo, and perform PCR –RFLP to identify Single
Nucleotide Polymorphisms in genes associated in production of milk and its
quality. Milk contains proteins whose genes show many variations and hence affect
milk proteins and fat contents. Thus SNP can be used as a molecular marker to
assess milk quality, production and other traits and hence be used to enhance milk
production from the cattle across the whole country. This would not only provide
food security to the entire populations and also increase incomes of livestock
farmers.
