Title: Cross Sums Number Combination Guide

Description: Sum information on solving Cross Sums (the pen and pencil puzzles), also known as Cross Additions.
Listing of blanks available, numbers possible, and the number combinations that are possible for those blanks
and that number. [~3500WC]

Notes: This document was originally multiple separate documents. Thanks to Bryanna B for alerting me to a missing
combination for 4 Blanks, #4, to Chris Ring for pointing out the omission of two sums for 4 Blanks - 20 and 22,
and to Ron Rontree for fixes to 4 blanks - 18 ☺

Cross Sums, also called Cross Additions, are the puzzles that are like crosswords, in that
each consecutive blank in a row or column combines to form the answer to a question.
The difference, however, is that Cross Sums/Additions have a clue of a number, and the
answer is the numbers that combine to create that sum. The following image is an
example of such a puzzle.

If we assume that no digit can be used more then once per digit combination (so one
cannot have 3 and 3 for 6, for example), then the following listings are possible.

To create this list, I first determine what the lowest and highest number for any number
of blanks was. Lowest number is determined by starting with 1, and adding consecutive
numbers until total numbers are equal to blanks. Example, if the blanks are 5, then the
lowest number is 1+2+3+4+5 = 15 and the highest is 9+8+7+6+5 = 35 (determined by
starting with 9 and working one's way down).

To start with, there are a couple of different ways to find the table below that will help
you. If you know the number of blanks that you have, then you can simply skip to the
pages with those number of blanks on them (all combinations are grouped by number of
blanks).

• Table listing two blanks contain numbers 3 to 17.

• Table listing three blanks contain numbers 6 to 24.
• Table listing four blanks contain numbers 10 to 30.
• Table listing five blanks contain numbers 15 to 35.
• Table listing six blanks contain numbers 21 to 39.
• Table listing seven blanks contain numbers 28 to 42.
• Table listing eight blanks contain numbers 36 to 44.
• Table listing nine blanks contains the number 45.

On the other hand, if you know the number that you are trying to obtain, you can use the
following information to help you.

This table can be found on the next page. Bold blank information means that there is
only one possibility for that number, in that number of blanks. For example, if you are
trying to find the numbers that combine to 34, when you have 5 blanks, you’ll find that
there is only one possibility. For ease of printing, I have placed each listing on its own
page (save 8 and 9 which fit on one page), so that any updates there may be will not
require this entire document to be reprinted.
