PHY 103 Practice Problem Set –12 IITK /ynm June 17, 2021
1. Two charges ±𝑞 are on parallel trajectories a distance d apart, moving with equal
speeds 𝑣 in opposite directions. The aim is to calculate the force on +𝑞 due to −𝑞
at the instant they cross.
Find each of the following quantities in three Frames
A: Lab frame as given in the figure below,
B: Frame in which +𝑞 is at rest, and
C: Frame in which −𝑞 at rest:
i) 𝐸⃗ 𝑎𝑡 + 𝑞 𝑑𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑜 − 𝑞
ii) 𝐵⃗ 𝑎𝑡 + 𝑞 𝑑𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑜 − 𝑞
iii) 𝐹 𝑜𝑛 + 𝑞 𝑑𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑜 − 𝑞
For comparison you can put your results in a tabular form with each quantity
in a row, and each frame in column.

2. Consider a Lab frame 𝒮 in which 𝐸⃗ and 𝐵
⃗ are neither parallel nor perpendicular at
a point P in 𝒮.
We want to find a condition on the velocity vector 𝑣 with which an inertial frame
𝒮̅ should move with respect to 𝒮 such that 𝐸⃗̅ and 𝐵
⃗̅ in 𝒮̅ become parallel at that
point. Show that the condition is
𝑣 𝐸⃗ × 𝐵
⃗
2 = 2
1 + 𝑣 ⁄𝑐 2 (𝐵 2 + 𝐸 ⁄ 2 )
𝑐
For convenience, without loss of generality, you can start with 𝐸⃗ pointing in 𝑧̂
⃗ in the y-z plane, and then look for the condition in another
direction and 𝐵
inertial frame.
Is there a frame in which the two are perpendicular?

3. A charge q is released from rest at the origin in the presence of a uniform electric
field 𝐸⃗ = 𝐸0 𝑘̂ , and a uniform magnetic field 𝐵⃗ = 𝐵0 𝑖̂ . Find the trajectory of the
particle by transforming to a frame in which the electric field is zero. Find the path
in that system and transform it back to the original frame. Assume 𝐸0 < 𝑐𝐵0 .
Compare your results with that obtained without relativistic considerations.
