INTRODUCTION:

To understand how community engagement works, it is necessary to be aware of its


key features. The following discussions and activities on this module are important
points for you to understand community engagement.

OBJECTIVES:
 Determine the areas and benefits of community engagement.
 Apply the concepts and key points of community engagement.
 Design and construct a specifically planned community engagement.

ACTIVITY 1:
In the box below, write the concerns that you observed in your community. Then, in the
circle below, write the things that you plan to do and the group of people who are
involved to help solve these concerns.

 How does research insinuate the desire for improvement?

 What makes collaboration important in attaining the objectives of conducting


community engagement?

 Community engagement is the process of working together in the members of


a group based on geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to
address issues affecting the whole group.

 It is considered as a power vehicle because it can lead to environmental and


behavioral changes that will improve the health of the community and its
members.
In your activity above, the people that are involved in what we call the partnership
and coalitions.
 Partnership and coalitions are involved to mobilize resources and influence
systems, change relationships among partners, and serve as catalysts for
changing policies and programs.

Examples are:
Organized groups, agencies, institutions, or individuals.

Take note: Make sure your plans, emphasize the importance of collaboration.

 Collaboration may be engaged in the promotion, research, or policymaking.


With these, there would be a desire for improvement, and the importance of
being involved in the partnership is felt.

ACTIVITY 2:
Using the table given below, construct a specific table of your planned community
engagement in the following areas of focus.
 The poorest of the poor
 Out of school youth
Apply the concepts and key points that are provided on page 6 of this module.
Use a separate sheet of bond paper in each following areas of focus. Write in Landscape

Note: To ensure the success of community engagement activities, appropriate


procedures should be carefully planned, and ideas should also be generated to formulate
better plans for implementation. You must consider the various points presented, to
effectively carry out a long term community engagement activity that will serve as a
meaningful experience.

The following points and tips should be kept in mind when doing community
engagement efforts.

Before Starting A community Engagement Effort


 Be clear about the purpose and your goals
 Know the populations or communities you want to engage
 Be knowledgeable of the community’s culture, economic conditions, social
networks, political and power structures, norms and values of the community.
 Learn about the community’s perceptions of those initiating the engagement
activities.
For Engagement to Occur
 Go to the community
 Establish relationship, build trust
 Work with formal and informal groups
For Engagement to Succeed
 Partnering with the community
 Recognize and respect the diversity of the community
 Awarenesss of the various factors that might affect the engagement
 Identify and mobilize community assets
 Asses the stregths and weakness
 Be flexible enough to meet changing needs
 Community collaboration and long term commitment

The key features of community engagement include the collaboration of members; focus
on the objectives towards community improvement, and openness to partnership supports.
SUMMARY/KEYPOINTS:

In a community engagement continuum, there is an increasing level of community


involvement, impact, trust and communication flow.
Community engagement has areas to consider and each has its corresponding benefits.
These areas includes your agenda, the design and delivery of your community engagement, its
implementation, ethical considerations, public involved in the project, the academic partners,
individual participants, community organization and general public.
The society serves as an important contribution toward community engagement
activities. In line with this, there are important points to consider when you are doing
community engagement efforts. There are steps to be planned out before starting a community
engagement effort and points to keep in mind for the engagement to occur and succeed.
