Let’s learn to form smallest and
largest numbers from a given set of
numbers.

In examples on the formation of greatest and the
smallest number we know that the procedure of
arranging the numbers in ascending and descending
order. The position of the digit at the extreme left of
a number increases its place value. So the greatest
digit should be placed at the extreme left side of the
number to enhance its value.

Consider the following:

1. Form the greatest and the smallest number using the digits
6, 3, 8, 7, 1

• The smallest number is formed by the following the reverse procedure.

(a) The greatest digit is placed at one's place.

(b) The next smaller digit at ten’s place and so on till all the given digits are finished.

(c) The smallest digit is placed at the highest place of the number.

• We may say the procedure of forming the greatest number is as follows:

(a) The smallest digit is placed at one’s place.

(b) The next greater digit is placed at ten's place.

(c) The next greater digit is placed at hundred's place and so on.

(d) The greatest digit is placed at the highest place of the number.
