Approved Method Statement.
The Store keeper :
Shall be responsible for to ensure issuance of materials to the site with reference to
Material Inspection Records (MIR’s) and suitable manner of storing the material as
pre the manufacturer recommendation.
Pipes are different sizes or wall thickness will be stored separately whenever
applicable. Where this is not possible, those with larger diameter and or
thickness will be placed at the bottom of the stack.
All pipe fittings will be stored and protected in boxes & categorized size
wise.
TRANSPORT
When transferring pipes from the store to site, care should be taken to
avoid impact and to ensure that the temporary site storage (the surface
where pipes shall be laid to be processed, joint) is free of any sharp objects
or harmful debris.
Where mechanical handling is employed, metal slings, hooks and chains
must not come in direct contact with the pipe surface.
While in transient, pipe shall be well secured and well supported.
Pipes maybe transported by rolling them gently over the timbers without
causing any impact on the pipe surface.
INSTALLATION:
invert levels as shown on the WSD’s are met; wherever the pipes are large
enough to require a trench (specially between manholes) the trenches
shall be prepared in accordance to paragraph
The route, dimensions, levels of the excavated trenches for underground
pipes will be as per approved WSD’s, manufacturer’s instructions for laying,
jointing, and installation of the pipes. The surveyor shall certify that the
excavated level is correct. The Trench shall be excavated after backfilling,
prepared with bedding, after pipe installation and testing is complete the
CONTRACTOR shall encased pipes with concrete, and compacted.
Pipes connected to the sanitary fixtures (W.C’s, W.B’s, FT’s, Shower Drains,
sink) within the building shall be extended vertically during casting to
secure the fixture opening.
Pipe penetrations to the building below grade boundary wall (Retaining
wall) shall be marked to maintain the pipes’ gradients.
When a pipe penetration requires special protection, a sleeve must be
provided. This sleeve location shall be as per WSD’s and shall be marked
accordingly (maintaining the pipe gradient). Installed sleeve shall have an
outside diameter wide enough to secure the pipe passage freely without
affecting its slope.
Waste pipes shall be connected to Gully traps before connection to the
manhole.
TRENCH PREPARATION
The width of the trench at the crown of the pipe shall be as per IFC
Drawing, but in no case should it be less than the outside diameter of the
pipe plus 300 mm to allow compaction of the side fill material.
The trench bottom shall be carefully examined for the presence of sharp
objects or harmful debris. Basic examination of the overall trench tidiness
and conformity to requirements is carried by the contractor and verified by
the subcontractor.
The thickness of the prepared bedding should be minimum 100 mm.
PIPE LAYING
Pipe gradients and slopes as per WSD’s shall be accomplished, adjusted, and
maintained throughout the pipe laying processes. Pipe gradient shall be regularly
checked with the spirit level after each process to ensure that in no case shall this
gradient be compromised.
uPVC pipes with integral Push-fit (R/R) sockets shall be joint in the trench
whenever applicable.
Pipes up to 6” DIA may, if necessary, can be joint on the trench side and
then snaked into the trench. Joints shall be checked after the pipe is in final
position to ensure they are sound, tight, and intact.
Push-fit (R/R) socket pipes shall be laid on the bedding specified above
and anchored at changes of direction, reduction in diameter and dead
ends.
All tools and equipment, adhesives, etc. shall be removed from the trench
prior to backfill. Bottom of pipe shall be carefully checked to ensure pipe is
laid properly.
The expansion/contraction of buried pipes carrying soil and waste (within
normal temperature medium) shall be accommodated and absorbed by
the Push-fit (R/R) socket and no expansion joints are needed.
The End of Drainage pipe End Cap must be provided.
Solvent Cement socket pipes (For 2 inch pipe and below as per BS5255)
Pipes shall be joint at the trench side and then snaked into the trench.
Proper curing time should be allowed between making the last joint and
snaking the pipe into the trench; if that technique is not applicable, pipes
may individually be joint in the trench.
Anchors are not required as the solvent cement joints will easily sustain
loads created by internal fluid pressure.
If the pipes are laid in hot weather, the temp. of the pipes shall be reduced
before making final connections. Temp. may be reduced by partial
backfilling
PIPE JOINTING
Selection of the pipe joint (Whether push-fit rubber ring, or Solvent Cement) shall
be as approved material submittal and project specification.
Carefully clean, examine the spigot, rubber sealing ring & the inside of the
socket.
Form a loop and insert the rubber ring with the thickest edge innermost.
Allow ring to seat evenly around the groove, finally snapping into position
by pressing down on the remaining portion of the loop.
Lubricate the chamfered end of the pipe a min. distance of ½ of the spigot
length.
Push pipe into socket up to the insertion mark previously made after
making sure that the pipes are aligned both in horizontal and vertical
planes.
Solvent Cement Pipes
Solvent cement and cleaner should be stored in a cool and dry place;
never dilute the solvent cement with any other fluid.
Replace lid of the cement container as soon as the cement is applied and
observe the instructions on the container body and manufacturer
recommendations.
Mark depth of entry of the spigot and the alignment mark.
Thoroughly abrade spigot and socket bonding surfaces using sandpaper.
Then clean the surfaces with proper cleaning fluid.
Using a clean brush, cement shall be applied evenly and in one coat to
spigot and socket in longitudinal strokes. If loose fits can still be found, a
second coat shall be applied to the spigot end.
Immediately and without twisting, spigot shall be inserted into socket until
entry-mark; and shall be held in position for second’s then excess cement
shall be wiped.
Curing time vary, yet, 24 hours shall be allowed before testing when
applicable.
No coatings, Adhesives, nor paint shall be applied on neither the pipes,
fittings, nor accessories attached to the pipes (Flanges, rubber seals, etc.)
inner or outer surfaces specially the solvent cement joint system. Any paint,
coating, adhesive might alter the chemical behaviour of the pipe surface
and its reaction to the cement, or might alter the pipe/fitting/accessories
inner or outer dimension which may compromise the jointing properties of
the pipes & thus shall be prohibited.
PRESSURE TESTING
Pressure testing shall be carried out as explained in the dedicated Part “TESTING” of
this MS. Please refer to the part for detailed procedures of testing below grade
pipes.
BACKFILLING
Heavy mechanical compactors should not be used until the fill has
reached a height of at least 300 mm above the crown of the pipe.
Encasement: All pipes running under the building shall be encased in
concrete of 150 mm thickness by the CONTRACTOR. Other pipes that
require specific protection (under road crossing) shall also be protected in
the same manner and for Pipes below 600 mm from F.F.L shall be encased
pipes with concrete not closer than 150 mm or more than 300 mm unless
otherwise is specified in the contract specifications.
TESTING
After installation activities are completed, and before backfilling, all piping
sections shall be tested for leakage in the described below manner; testing
can be carried out for the system at its entirety, or to sections (segments,
portions) of the system one after the other; if the section passes the testing
procedures backfilling could begin for that particular segment. In no case
should the system be completely backfilled unless all the constituting
segments are tested and passed.
Test pressure for uPVC below grade pipes shall be a hydrostatic test only;
pipes shall not be tested with compressed air.
Test pressure for below grade gravity flow shall be 1.5 mtrs of water for the
highest point of the pipe being tested and shall not exceed 4 mtrs for the
lowest point of the pipe being tested.
Install plugs, gauges, temporary vertical pipes, etc. and all the necessary
instruments required to carry out the required hydrostatic test. Make sure
that the water supplied for the test comes from a source that can deliver
the required pressure for the test.
Slowly fill the pipe with water with special care for air removal while filling.
All entrapped air shall be released before the hydrostatic test begins.
Gradually raise the pressure in the system/section being tested up to the
specified above pressure limit. From the timing point of view, the test can
be said to have started once the test pressure is reached.
The system shall remain under pressure for 2 hours. If the water level drops
due to reasons other than leakage (entrapped air, accidental water spill,
etc) refill up to the specified level and start the test period again from zero
time.
The pipe shall be judged to have passed the test if the quantity of water
required to restore original water level does not exceed the amount
specified by the pipe manufacturer that accounts for the elastic
characteristics and high thermal expansion of uPVC.
An IR shall be raised before conducting the above test procedures so that
the test can be witnessed by the Consultant to certify the drainage system
tightness.
Water shall be drained slowly and carefully from the system and Keep
some water inside the pipe for monitoring purpose and remaining removal
water shall be carried out from selected pipe points to ensure utmost
draining to the draining points provided by the Contractor.
TRAINING
Tool box talks will be given in every start of activity base on approved Method of
Statement and ITP. A lesson learned training and awareness program will be
conducted on a weekly basis to give the project team information and comments
based on installation and quality related issue in the site and in the project as a
whole.
WORKING HOURS
As per main contractor timing. Any changes or additional working hours will be
advised to the main contractor and consultant as well.
