2.61 Day 68: Tafsir – Part 61

SURAH AL-KAHF AYAH 71-73

Description

This video discusses the tafsir of ayahs 71-73

AYAH 71
ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ
ْ ْ
We are on the conlusion of this ayah where Musa ‘alayhi alsalam will make the bold accusatory statement ‫

ْ
The first thing to note is that Musa started out with a question, ‫
َ َ ‫?أ‬

ْ ْ
o Then the next piece is giving a reason for that question - ‫ق أَه َلها‬
ِ ُ‫ لِت‬which has ‫الم العةل‬
َ
o And the third part is a statement by itself, and can even be an accusation
 The case of why Musa is asking the question is not because he is curious.
o This is a time when Khidr is ripping the boards out and it isn’t a time where Musa would ask questions
calmly.
o Musa is actually losing it as this is being done an that’s why he adds the reason. He is being very critical of
Khidr.
 This is why you’re doing it? So that you can drown its people?
 There is another recitation of it, so that the people will drown?
ْ ْ

o ‫ جاء‬and ‫ – أىت‬general definiteion means to come – but they both have many other definitions
 For example, to attack or to do something
 Can also mean committing a crime
 So can come in the meaning of ‫ – ارتكاب‬basically to commit something – mostly committing a
crime
 So here the meaning is you have committed, in the sense of a crime
 ‫ جاء‬is more emphatic than ‫أىت‬
o Musa is upset because he had made an oath with Allah when he had accidentally killed someone. And he
said, on the account of You Allah forgiving me for killing someone mistakenly, I will never back up those who
commit crimes.
 And so Musa has this deep internal conflict inside him as he sees what Khidr is doing

o ‫ – إمر‬something despicable, unusual, strange and out of the ordinary not in a good way
o Musa didn’t just stop at the question – but he added on to it an accusation against Khidr because he sees
that he has done something unheard of and horrible
o Al-Shaarawi says, ‘Musa is very conscious of the divine law that you don’ destroy other people’s property, on
top of that to drown people that boarded the ship, so Musa sasw the matter to be a grave one and the harm
in it is massive.’
 ‫ إمرا‬has lots of implications – there are lots of evils being done at the same time
 This is because Musa draws from one bag or treasure vault and Khidr draws from yet another.
 In other words, they’re both drawing from books and revelation – Musa from Torah but
Khidr from where?
o There is another book of Allah that has all calamities written in it before Allah
releases and unleashes these calamities. So Khidr is executing these matters of
Allah.
o They are both drawing from books of Allah, but they are not books that are
connected with each other to the eyes of Khidr and Musa
‫ – أ ِمر – يأمر‬when lots of things are happening at once
َ
o
َ
 Can be defined as something that is harmful and evil
 This meaning leads to another debate between the scholars of , if khidr is operating on the
command of Allah, and Musa is a messenger of Allah, then how can one messenger accuse and
criticize another messenger of Allah?
 Musa will be taught lessons that are not part of normal revelations. And it is because they
are difficult to grasp, even for the likes of Musa, that they are not part of revelation.
 And we saw moments ago that Musa humbled himself infront of his teacher and said that
he will be patient by the standards of his teacher
 But all of that goes out of the window because it seems at face value that it contradicts
what he has learned from the Torah
 In the next story, the word ‫ نكرا‬is used. So why was ‫ إمرا‬used here and not ‫?

o Ibn Ashoor: ‫ نكرا‬is something evil that has already been donen.

o ‫ إمرا‬is a decision to do evil

o So the damage is just being done but hasn’t been done so you can still fix it
o Compare that to the next story where Khidr kills a child. This can’t be undone and that’s why ‫ نكرا‬is used.
o But here the damage isn’t to its full extent and can still be fixed and reversed.
o There is a parallel of Musa being thrown into a river with a high likelihood of him drowning as a baby. Just
like these men are being thrown into the water to also be saved.

AYAH 72
ْ
 Musa is being given his first warning
 Musa is angry at Khidr because he saw him ripping up a ship.

 And Khidr is telling him, didn’t I tell you to be patient? But Musa is like, you’re going to tell me?? So Musa is in a
difficult position

AYAH 73
 Musa is swallowing his anger, struggling and responding – ok don’t take me into account by that which I forgot
in the first half of this ayah
ْ ْ ‫ – ال ت ْره ْقني م‬don’t invalidate me or nullify me (don’t tell me outright
The second half - ‫
o ِ ِ ِ ُ َ
that I’m wrong)
o ‫ – رهق‬an inclination towards violence
 Could also mean attributing violence to someone else – so Musa is telling Khidr not to think of
him as aggressive
 But could also mean don’t test my patience and don’t make me violent
 Also means don’t make me lose my mind
ْ
o ً ‫ – ُع‬difficulty
 Don’t provoke me towards violence and don’t consider my violent or irrational – don’t expel me
in my decision – his ‫ أمر‬could be his relationship with his teacher
 Could also be the command Musa was given to be silent – so don’t be hard on me that I
broke it
 But it could also mean don’t be hard on me because I spoke up about something bad
that I saw
ْ
 ً ‫ – ُع‬please don’t do this to make things more difficult between us.
 Al-Aloosi says: Musa is asking Khidr to not make a big deal out of this, to keep going on
and asking him to forget it ever happened and to keep going on
o Musa isn’t just humbling himself but it is a mix of anger, justification and a ‘I still
have to work with you’
o Don’t overwhelm or overburden me in this decision of my learning with you
because it will make it too difficult to follow you if you do stuff like this
o Don’t make it difficult for me to follow you and make it easy for me by ignoring
my flip outs and lets not argue
