INSIGHTFUL PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

What is the difference between personal development and personality
development?
Strengthscape, a company that specializes in training and development defines
personal development as an individual’s perception of self and the surrounding
environment. It is a combination of how well people know themselves, how they view
their present and future situation, and how well do they recover from situations which
are not in their favour. Personal development is defined by various authors as the
development of the organized pattern of behaviour and attitudes that makes a person
distinctive. Personal development in general is just a part or a piece of personality
development. However, if we are to define personality development, the term takes
into account the physical as well as the mental state of an individual. It is also an
intiative to improve ones traits and qualities which contribute to your overall
personality.
There are three key factors which affect personal development. First, Self-
esteem, defined as that how one values oneself or how clear is one about one’s
strengths and weaknesses. It also refers to how much pleasure does one derive from
what one does. Second, Optimism which is a facet of Emotional Intelligence, and
also a result of Emotional Intelligence. Being optimistic means: feeling good about
oneself and one’s relationships, which results to being confident about one’s future
and believing that one’s best – efforts and results – are yet to come. Third, Resilience:
The ability: to get back on one’s feet after disappointment for failure and learning from
mistakes and recover back one’s ability to perform.
Moreover in one of the entries written in Essay4Today the writer cited other
factors which can also influence or might affect career choices and personal
development. One’s cultural background as well as his regional area and ethnic group
can influence the future work choice. A person’s expectations and values is shaped
according to the cultural issues which have connections with different areas of our
lives. Our understanding of the nature of expectations and values can lead us to the
understanding of our personality and our decisions for career choice.

Module in Personality Development

First Semester- 2nd Quarter Week 13
In addition to that, a person’s life and career choices also lie in the context of
the economic and social issues. As a matter of fact, it is really true that we cannot
choose the society in which we have to live, but we can choose the way of life.
Different situations and conditions can take place in our economic and social lives
which will definitely give us a choice and a certain effect on it. And we have to take
into account this factor. Students who graduated in junior or senior high might
experience financial challenge when their parents were displaced from job and finds
no replacement or whatsoever to sustain their family. Career choices will then be
limited for students and they will be put to a situation where they have to make a
decision to work rather than continue for further studies in college. However, this
student will always seek for means to improve him/herself by all means to attain
personal development.
There are benefits of attaining personal development. It can contribute to your
overall maturity, success and satisfaction. You can use it to reach your goal, advance
in your career, improve your strenghts and talents, better yourself, and always finding
fulfillment in all the things that you do.
Learning the skills for personal development is a challenge for each one.
Personal development skills can be traits or qualities each one already have or ones
you can gain through education and training. Each person will value different
personal development skills depending on their goals, cited are some examples of
skills that people aim to develop.

others in social situations.

one’s ability to plan, schedule and prioritize. Good organization can help save time,

situations. A good problem solver knows how to stay calm when they encounter
