The concept of a career or choice of occupation begins right from the time
children indulge in pretend play as a doctor, teacher, and other professionals they
see around them. Often, children find themselves answering questions as to what
they want to become when they are older. Although, this process starts early, actual
planning and decision-making start in adolescence (the period between 13 and 18
years). It is a key developmental period characterized by several biological and
psychological changes and requires the successful resolution of specific tasks like
identity achievement. It is a stage where they struggle to find a balance between
obedience and independence. Along with other skills, an adolescent need to develop
adequate decision-making skills as several important decisions that will have an
impact in their future will be taken in this period. Human development is one of the
most stunning processes in life. The hallmark of such process is change. We all
change as we age, and many counts of these changes were studied by great thinkers
and various professionals like those in the field of education, social science, and
medicine.
Personal development is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their
skills and qualities, consider their aims in life and set goals to realize and maximize
their potential. Personal development plays a crucial role in one’s career growth. An
individual who can contribute not only to his area of expertise, but other domains as
well are bound to get quick promotions and lucrative incentives and rewards. Trust
me, personal development is imperative not only for career growth but also for mere
survival in the organization. No organization would like to retain an individual who
is resistant to changes and fails to perform in unpredictable and unforeseen
situations.

Role of Personal development in making career choice

1. You’ll figure out what you want to do.

By carrying out ongoing personal development, you’ll be learning more
about your abilities and aspirations. You’ll figure out where your values, beliefs,
and values lie, not to mention uncover a clearer purpose for what you’re doing –
both on a personal and professional level.
2. You’ll be able to make clear goals.
By figuring out more about yourself, you’ll be able to set clear and well-
informed goals. Whether it’s that taking a course helped you realize what career
you’d like to pursue or learning a new language made you want to travel.
Expanding your knowledge is a great way to help you make good decisions about
your future. Not only will you realize what you really want to do but also you’ll
be able to rule out paths that might not suit you as much as you thought.
Personal development helps you set goals and expectations for yourself. Any
individual without a vision in life not only fails to deliver but also gets easily lost
in the crowd. It is important to set expectations for yourself. There is a scope of
improvement always. Never ever feel that you are the best and you know
everything.
3. You’ll be motivated.

3 LU_Personal Development_Module 13
With clear and achievable targets, you’ll be more motivated to fulfil them
especially if you have a personal development plan to track your progress. This
means you’ll be more productive in carrying out the tasks you set yourself
(whether it’s at work, study, or home) – and you’ll be more likely to complete
them to a high standard. After all, it’s the only way you’ll achieve your goals.
4. You’ll improve your career prospects.
While personal development might seem separate from your professional
life, it could be a great way to achieve your career goals. And it’s not just what
you learn that could help you thrive at work but by making your commitment to
personal development clear to employers, you’ll be able to demonstrate
dedication and an ability to learn and grow. With most employers seeking
candidates who are willing to progress within an industry, you could be well on
your way to landing your dream role.
5. Personal development can contribute to your maturity, success,
and satisfaction.

people. They affect your ability to build relationships and make impressions
