Method Statement
I. Scope of Work.

Subject the completed fire alarm system to test in accordance with the
requirements of the specification and in accordance with NFPA-72 and as per the
manufacture recommendation.

II. System Components.

The following system components are covered under this method statement.

1. Fire Alarm Panel

2. Smoke Detectors

3. Heat Detectors

4. Manual Pull Station

5. Bells

6. Tamper switches

7. Water flow switches

Technical Section

A. Testing Equipment:

The following Instruments are required for start up, testing and commissioning
of fire alarm system

1. Electrical multimeter

2. Smoke detector tester

3. Heat detector tester

4. Manual Pull station restore key

B. Scope:

To check all electrical connection and system components as being connecter up

correctly and firmly to ensure the safe and satisfactory testing and
commissioning of fire alarm system as per spec's.

Testing and commissioning Procedure:

1. Pre testing (polarity & continuity test):

a) Signature Data Circuit (Detection loops)

1. Verify the continuity of each conductor.

2. Measure the resistance between each conductor and earth ground. The
resistance should be infinite.

b) DC Notification Appliance Circuit:

1. Measure the resistance between conductors. The circuit resistance should

be infinite if no devices are installed on the circuit. The circuit resistance
should be approximately between 47KΩ when the polarized notification
appliances and EOL resistor are correctly installed.

2. Reverse the meter leads. The circuit resistance should be approximately

between 10Ω and 20Ω.If the resistance reading is still approximately the
same value when the meter leads are reversed, one or more polarized
devices are installed incorrectly.
3. Measure the resistance between each conductor and earth ground. The
resistance should be infinite.

2. Pre Testing (Visual Check):

Initial Installation Testing

1. Visually inspect each detector and verify it is installed in the correct

location and will not be adversely affected by factors not apparent on the
plans

2. Visually inspect each manual break glass and verify it is installed in the
correct location as per the drawings.

3. Visually inspect each Bell and verify it is installed in the correct location as
per the drawings.

4. Visually inspect each Interface module and verify it is installed in the

correct location, terminated correctly to other systems as per the
drawings.

System Acceptance Test: As per specs.

(i) Test initiating and indicating circuits for proper signal transmission
under open circuit test.

(ii) Test a random initiating device in each loop for alarm operation and
proper response at the control unit.

(iii) Test short circuit for all circuits and make sure that trouble signal
actuated.

(iv) Test smoke detectors with smoke tester and heat detector with heat
source.
(v) Test and verify activation of random flow switch and tamper switch
through the indication fire alarm panel.

(vi) Demonstrate the system to the client.

Operational check:

a. Normal Condition:

- Verify that the fire alarm panel is in normal condition (Green Led Indicator is
ON)

b. Fire Condition:

Activate the alarm initiating devices in the system.

Operating the break glass stations : By using the test key.

Test smoke detector : By using injecting smoke from smoke

tester

Test Supervisory signals : By simulating the corresponding inputs

Test the alarm appliances : By putting the system in alarm condition

Record all the test results in the field testing report.

Observe the following indications and operations in the panel.

1. Main fire lamp is lit.

2. The buzzer sounds.

3. Alarm circuits operated.

4. The appropriate control module is operated.

5. The fire signal was sent to other systems.

c. Fault condition:

Simulate the following fault conditions and check the correct indication on the
panel front.

Battery Fault : By remove the battery fuse or lead

Mains fault : By switch off the AC mains

Short circuit detection loop : By applying short between the two

terminals

Open circuit detection loop : By making a break in +ve or –ve wires

Short circuit sounder lines : By applying short circuit

d. Battery test:

Check main power supply by disconnecting the standby power from the system
and test the system under maximum load conditions for five minutes.

Observe the panel operates satisfactorily.

Check control panel keyboard functions:

a) Buzzer mute

b) Silence alarm

c) Reset
d) Evacuate

3. Corrective Action:

Any device or system function found to be unacceptable shall be (X) or (√) on the
test sheets. The subsequent re-test of the item shall be recorded and any
defective item will be replaced and re-tested.
