B. Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
1. Course Description
This course provides students with advanced knowledge regarding national and international
trends in disaster management and issues relating to disaster response. The course looks at in-
hospital disaster response as well as field response to disaster situations. The student will be
able to demonstrate advanced knowledge relating to pathophysiology of injury or illness
related to disaster, management of mass casualties, disaster planning and pandemic
preparedness and response.
2. Course Main Objective
This course exposes students to current advanced knowledge of emerging issues in this topic
area. Health care practitioners and other who work in conjunction with health services are
often part of disaster and pandemic responses within their own work environments and may
also be asked to be part of larger responses external to their work environments. This course
assists students to develop knowledge and skills related to identifying potential issues and
planning for, responding to, and managing, disaster and pandemic events from a national and
global perspective. Students will also develop presentation, online discussion management,
and reflective skills in this course.
