One day I left the palace without telling anyone. I decided to go on a pilgrimage
and visit the sacred shrines. After travelling for many days, I reached this lake.
Tired and thirsty, I stopped to quench my thirst and rest awhile. As I lay under a
banyan tree, I saw a lotus rise out of the waters. No other flower could match its
beauty. It had a thousand petals in all the colours of Indra’s bow and its scent was
sweeter than that of a jasmine. I came down these steps, and stretched out my
hand to pluck it. But before my hand could touch the lotus, it sank back into the
water.

IV] A Read the following passage and answer the questions. (3)
Kathakali is a popular dance-drama from Kerala. The word Kathakali literally
means ‘story play’. Kathakali has a long tradition and dates back to the 17th
Century. It was revived and popularized by Mahakavi, Vallathol Menon, who was
one of the founders of the Kerala Kalamandalam, a centre for learning performing
arts.
The stories or scenes enacted in Kathakali are usually from mythology like
stories from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the ancient scriptures known
as ‘Puranas’. Kathakali is performed only by men. Male characters are portrayed
by men dressed in women’s costumes. However, today there are Kathakali
performance, with some female characters being played by women.
