Every art form has a definite function since it satisfies a particular need.

The four major functions of art are:

Aesthetic function – through art, man becomes conscious of the beauty of nature and
learns to use, love, and preserve them for his enjoyment and appreciation

The first major function of art is aesthetic. Some art are intended to bring peace and
calmness to people once it appeals to the senses – sense of sight, sound, taste, touch,
and smell. Notice how listening to music uplifts a sad person’s mood. It is believed that
unborn babies can hear music in the second trimester, but they start responding to
noises and sounds only in the third trimester. A study claims that babies who heard a
particular song while in the womb appeared to calm down when they heard the same
song after birth. Another example is a reduced stress level of a person when looking at
a painting.

Utilitarian function – some art prioritizes its function over its aesthetics. It enables man
to live in comfort and happiness.
Some art may still be aesthetically pleasing but are more appreciated for its utility.
Through art, we are provided with shelter, clothing, food, light, medicine, etc. Thus, our
basic needs are met. In the Philippine context, an example is our jeepneys. At the end
of the World War II, Filipinos were faced with transportation problems. Out of our
ancestor’s ingenuity, they converted the US military jeeps into the vehicle now tagged
as the king of the road. However, Filipinos’ creativity does not stop in this invention. It is
amazing to see that these jeepneys are designed with so many vibrant colors.
Depending on the liking of the owners, it is also painted with either religious images,
comic book or cartoon characters.
