The previous lesson provided you with the different media-based
arts in the Philippines and its elements.

It also introduced you with the different representative artists as

well as distinct characteristics of media-based arts and design in the
Philippines.
In this lesson, you will have an outline on the role or function of
artworks by evaluating their utilization and combination of art elements
and principles.
In learning the topic, you also value the truism that Filipino
ingenuity is distinct, exceptional, and on a par with global standards.
In this sense, you will be able to express yourself through an
artwork that derives the traditions/history of your community.

ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF ARTWORKS ON MEDIA-BASED ARTS

COMMUNICATION. Even at its simplest, art is a form of communication. Most forms of

communication have an intent or goal directed toward other people. For example,
photographs are essential in communication fields such as journalism and education.

EXPRESSION OF THE IMAGINATION. Media arts specifically films, animation and

comic strips provide a means to express the imagination (things, places, ideas that are
unreal or unknowable) in non-grammatic ways. An artist can create visual imagery of
mythical animals, religious concepts such as heaven or hell, superheroes, fictional
places, or other things from their creative minds.

ENTERTAINMENT. Art may seek to bring about a 1993

particular emotion or mood, for the purpose of relaxing

or entertaining the viewer. This is often the function of
the art industries such as Films, Animation, Comics
Strip and even digital media.

POLITICAL CHANGE. One of the defining functions of

early twentieth-century art has been to use visual
images and motion pictures to bring about political
change. This purpose of art continues today in many
art forms and aimed to expose corruption of the ruling
class, including government, the wealthy, and
corporations.

SOCIAL CAUSES. Media arts is greatly used to raise

awareness for a large variety of causes. A number of art
activities are aimed at raising awareness about relevant
issues such as AIDS, mental health, cancer and other topics,
such as ocean conservation, human rights social inequality
and pollution. Trashion, using trash to make fashion, is one
example of using art to raise awareness about pollution.

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND HEALING

PURPOSES. Art is also used by art therapists, psychotherapists and clinical
psychologists as art therapy. The end product (the art object) is not the principal goal in
this case, but rather a process of healing, through creative acts, is sought. The
subsequent piece of artwork may also offer perception into the troubles experienced by
the subject and may suggest suitable approaches to be used in more straight forms of
therapy. The works of Filipino multi-awarded designer, Kenneth Cobunpue, emanates the
purpose of creativity and therapy.

5
PROPAGANDA OR COMMERCIALISM. Art is utilized
as a form of propaganda, and thus can be used to subtly
influence popular conceptions (especially regarding political
issues). In a similar way, art that tries to sell a product also
influences mood and emotions. In both cases, the purpose
of art here is to manipulate the viewer into a particular
emotional or psychological response toward a particular idea
or object.

CULTURAL APPRECIATION. Media-based arts and design

is a major key player in promoting cultural awareness and
introducing the beauty and traditions of our country to the
whole world.
