My Journey of Learning The English Language

My journey of learning the English language started with this perception which I built
in my childhood period. I perceived English Language not as a language which
connects to people, share emotions, ideas but as a medium, a tool or a weapon to
show superiority, dominance over others. The impact of English language has been
so much powerful, it is being used as a special character to decides our class,
status and personality. My judgement is based on the perception of general people
towards English language . I wish to share one of my experience with you which I
recollected from my childhood days.

I belong from a rural village where very few people were literate and among the
literate people, few of them were able to speak English well and those who used to
speaks well, treated as a hero by the villagers. They had to show their heroism,
during a marriage ceremony. During the marriage ceremony, there was a prevalent
tradition of reception programme, usually, organized by a groom family. The groom
family used to hire some English speaking people to present a reception lecture in
English language. It was expected from the groom side too, to defend by replying in
English. If they failed to defend, had to face hooting from the villagers. And if
defended well, treated as a hero by everyone. This story shows the supremacy of
English language and how it was being used as a means to defame people.

With such high impression, I started my journey with English language. During my
childhood days, I didn’t give attention on learning the process of language rather
than gave much attention on by heart the required materials to fulfil my educational
needs. I completed my educational career in Hindi medium.

I have always been fascinated about English language. I still feel the same
passion, excitement and amusement as I used to feel in my childhood days. I find
myself that It is not going to end in near future.

Being a part of library profession, I have been fortunate enough in getting and
accessing different kinds of English learning materials easily.

At present, I am working in TISS Guwahati Campus where I have to interact and

face with users at daily basis. North East people are more comfortable in English
language. I take this as an opportunity to get more exposure.

Again, I am taking this workshop too as an opportunity to shape my English

language learning skill at the last phase of my career. My specific expectation from
this workshop is- how I can write & speak simple English in a confident way.

I have intentionally crossed the word limitation to share my story with you.
