Movie Analysis in a Literature

Class Suggested Structure


SURVEY OF ENGLISH & AMERICAN LITERATURE

I. THE MOVIE

A. Title (tell something about it or its origin, give reasons why the movie was
entitled “___________” …)

B. Director (include his/her background, experiences, awards and achievements etc.,


other movies directed by him/her)

C. Playwright (his/her background similar to director)

D. Actors/Actresses (enlist all major and minor actors/actresses in the movie)

II. THE STORY and Its ELEMENTS

A. Characters
 Enumerate and describe each according to their roles in the movie
 Include pictures of each (from the scenes of the movie if possible)
 This can be in tabular form:

 Include unforgettable or famous lines of characters


o Example: “Walang himala!” – Nora Aunor

B. Setting
 Describe the setting and have the proof such as picture with captions.
 Discuss the significance of the setting in the flow of the story.

C. Plot

 Have it with sub-elements from the beginning to end of the story.


 This can be done in one of the following frameworks:
o Summary considering the events from the movie (patterns depend on the device
used – example, flashback
o Beginning (exposition); middle (complication, crisis, obligatory scene – open
collision between two opposing characters or forces, discovery; and ending

D. Theme

 Have the theme in expression or phrase


 Discuss the theme by citing situations or scenes which prove or support it.

E. Style

 The way which the playwright or director presents his/her idea or viewpoint in life as
observed in the movie.
o Example:
 He uses his own expression and acts
 He also acts
 He uses his background to support the performer’s performance

F. Language/Diction

 If the movie uses Visayan language, Tagalog or English language, then cite dialogues
which prove it.
 If there are other languages used, then have it in this part.

G. Music

 Enlist or describe the music or accompaniment used, then discuss how it helped
enhance the performance level of the actors/actresses or how you (audience) reacted
on it.

III. INSIGHTS or COMMENTARY

 Have your insights or personal views on the following aspects as observed in the movie
 Cultural Values and Traditions
 Impact of the movie to you or to the young Filipinos
 Other aspects such as socio-economic life, etc. as presented in the movie.
 NOTE: This is an important part of the review. As much as possible, this
should be supported by ideas, lines, dialogues or expert’s opinion.

IV. SUGGESTIONS and RECOMMENDATIONS

 You can have this in different ways


 Example: (considering ending and scenes)
 If you are to end the story, what or how would it be?
 What scenes would you add otherwise delete from the movie, give reasons.

FORMAT:

1. The front cover should include the title “Movie Analysis of (title of your chosen movie);
your name, course/year/section, subject and instructors full name.
2. The second cover should include the poster of the movie you have chosen to analyze.
3. Margins for top, bottom and right (1); left (1.5); Times New Roman, 12, short bond
paper.
4. Include documentations (e.g. pictures) while you are watching the movie.
5. You may use creative layouts depending on your chosen movie.
