How to be ME?

Draw something that represents you or something that describes the essence of your
personal identity. After drawing, write your explanation below. You can base it from a
personal story or an interesting experience. You can talk about your family and career, or
your goals, and dreams.

How to be ME?
If there is something that represents me or best describe my personal identity, it would be
a butterfly. Just like the butterfly I undergo a lot of phases, changes, and personal growth. I started
as a caterpillar, a kid that needs to be guided and nurtured by the hands of my parents. They were
my light that guides me through the dark times of my life, and held me up every time I fall. My
parents serve as the hands that hold and comfort me when I’m in fear and in doubts. As days,
weeks, months, and years passed the caterpillar that my parents used to care and protect has now
grown in a beautiful butterfly, a fine young woman. In my life, I encountered a lot of struggles and
difficulties. While growing, there are times where I broke my wings and stop me from flying.
When I was 6 years old, I broke my arms, and from that very moment I am so devastated, I felt
like that situation has limited me to do even more great things but with the help or in the palm of
the important people in my life, I learn to fight. That incident has taught me that, in order for me
fly much higher, I have to experience how to be broken and feel the pain to appreciate the beauty
of healing.

Just like any other butterfly, I am still in the process of searching a beautiful flower to land
on. I am still in the process of learning and developing myself. I am still chasing my dreams, and
along that chase I know I would eventually unveil my real identity. Butterflies are beautiful with
vibrant colors, but as they say, “Butterflies don’t see themselves, so they don’t have any idea how
beautiful they are.” There are some point of my life where I felt a lot of insecurities and doubted
my capabilities as a person. Hearing other people saying that I can’t make it, made me even more
see myself less. I felt so down where I loss motivation in soaring high and spread my wings. I
started to felt so worthless and empty without knowing that in the eyes of the person who truly
accepted and loved me, I am beautiful, I am enough, and I will forever be worth it. Because of
those people, even if there are times where I can’t see how beautiful, how playful I am as person, I
manage to believe in myself and believe that I can.

Butterflies have bright, vibrant colors, so they show us the beauty of life when we live it
fully, and I want to be that butterfly someday. A butterfly that inspires others and introduce the
beauty of transformation or metamorphosis.

Instruction: Answer the following debriefing questions. Write your answers in the space
provided. Refer to the activity “how to be ME?” for your answers.

1. What was your experience going through this exercise?

Going through this exercise, give me such a wonderful experience, the experience of
knowing myself better. This exercise give me a short moment of looking back to who I am
before and to how I change. And because of this, I am able to pinpoint my strength and
weaknesses as a person. It made me realize that the struggles that we all face serve as away
for us to be strong, see the bright side and discover the real us.

2. What were you thinking (self-talk) before and during the activity?

Before the activity, I think of the things that somehow relate to my personality. Also, it
made me question myself into how would I be able to associate my self with that thing. While
during the activity, I felt a little confused and I am having a second thought if I was able to
choose the best thing that represents or best describe my personal identity. But then, I’ve
come to think that from the thing that I choose which is butterfly, the thing that matters the
most is that I would be able to explain and express myself to the way I wanted to.

3. What is it you want us to see in you by telling this story?

By the story of the real life experiences that I share from this activity, the thing that I
wanted everyone to see is on how my life have been. I want everyone to realize that we all face
different challenges and undergo a lot of changes, but all of these is just for our own growth
and development. We can’t be the person of who we are today if we does not undergo all
those hardships. This could lead us in becoming a better person, aside from that, by letting
others view our life journey could somehow inspires them to fight and face life with a smile
being carved on their faces.
