3
Lesson Reading Measurements
1 in Terms of Resistance

Hey, you are pretty sure that your pair of shoes fits on you. Why? Because it
is your size. Therefore, size and measurements matter. They give critical information
for a purpose. In electricity, reading measurements of the three electrical quantities
matters a lot on electrical installation, maintenance, and the value of accurate
reading calculation on resistance.

What’s In

Each time, as we conduct various tasks on installation, maintenance, and

repair, we conduct the measurement or testing technique on reading the three
electrical quantities needed per job requirement.

Activity 1 - Hey Dude!

Directions: The illustration represents the functions of each electrical quantity -

voltage, current, and the resistance. Study the text below and write your answers in
your activity sheet.

inlet→

Assume that the pipeline is the electric current carrying wire. Look!
Somewhere near the entrance is a leak, and further ahead is a “U” trap. These two
conditions in the pipeline affects the water flow. These factors represent (1)
___________ . At a straight pipeline, water flows in a normal flow in the pipe, which
may represent the (2) _____________ while the water pressure pushed in the pipe
represents (3) ____________________.

4
Notes to the Teacher
Being a facilitator to this module, you have to emphasize the
accuracy of reading or calculating electrical quantity such as
resistance. Remind your learners to focus on solving, calculating,
and remembering. Better encourage them to use calculators to be
more accurate.

What’s New

Your journey continues! Speaking of journey, have you felt a force against
your car or motorcycle? What is it all about? Do you have any idea? It is the
resistance from air.

On the other hand, resistance in electricity is the opposition of current flow.

The normal flow is current and the pressure of flow is called voltage. These three are
interrelated with one another.

Before learning the concepts relative to resistance and how to read its
measurement using Ohm’s Law, color coding, and volt-ohmmeter, answer first the
first activity.

5
Activity 2 - Threesome

Directions: Study the illustration below. Tell the equivalent in terms of R, resistance,
V, voltage and I, current for (1), (2), and (3). Write your answer in your test worksheet

The man
The direction 2. _______________?
1. _______________?

The load

3. __________________?

Did you like the activity? Did you analyze the illustration properly?

In what part of the illustration is resistance? When we say resistance, what

does it mean? To learn more about resistance, go to the next page.

6
What is It

Electrical resistance represented by R is a measure of the opposition to

current flow in an electrical circuit. It is noted that different materials conduct
electricity differently. The unit of measurement for resistance (R) is ohms “Ω” named
after George Simon Ohms in 1827. An ohmmeter measures resistance.

Ohm’s Law expresses the relationship of current, voltage, and resistance

which is expressed in an equation R = V/R; where resistance is the quotient of the
voltage (V) over the current (I).

Methods of Reading Electrical Resistance

A. Ohm’s Law

Equation: E = I x R - equation in terms of voltage (E)

I = E / R - equation in terms of current (I)
R = E / I - equation in terms of resistance (R)
Where:

Unit of Unit
Quantity Symbol
Measurement Abbreviation

Current I Ampere (“Amp”) A

Voltage V Volt V

Resistance R Ohm Ω

Example:
In a simple circuit with 0.20 ampere current flow in a 220 volts power supply,
determine the resistance produced by temperature of light bulb.

Since: R = _________________?, based on given equation;

R=E/I
R = 220v/0.20amp. 1Ω = 1000kΩ
R = 1,100 Ω or 1.1k Ω

7
B. Ohmmeter Reading using Volt-ohmmeter.

Abstraction: Review from the reading measurement using Volt-ohmmeter.

To read the resistance, it is placed on the very top reading graduations, which is the
(0 to 20 counted by 1 per graduation), (20 to 50 counted by 2 per graduation), (50
to 100 counted by 10 per graduation), (100 to 200 counted by 20 per graduation),
(200 to 500 counted by 100 per graduation), (500 to 1k counted by 500 and 1k to

(δ)
3k counted 2k per graduation) and the infinity symbol means shorted.(graduation
may vary on brands and size of measuring tools, just see actual grading).

C. Reading using Color Coding (resistor)

Note: Now you are doing right using volt-ohmmeter. But, there are rules on testing
resistor (an electronic component) as one medium component when you are in
troubleshooting and repair, later on. You are already knowledgeable on adjusting
selector knob into the Ohms multiplier. Today, we are going to perform reading the
resistance through resistor color code.

9
Example 1 LEGEND
BL = Black
From the example above,
BR = Brown
• First band (BR) brown= 1 O = Orange
• Second band (BL) black= 0 GR = Green
Equals to = 10 GY = Grey
GO = Gold
• Third band (O) Orange is multiplier = 10 x 1kΩ or 1,000Ω B =Blue
• Fourth band (BR) brown = + 1% S = Silver
Answer = 10kΩ+ 1% or 10,000 Ω+ 1% Y = Yellow
W = White
V = Violet

Example 2

From the example below,

• First band (BR) brown= 1

• Second band (BL) black= 0
• Third band (BL) black= 0
Equals to = 100

• Fourth band (O) Orange is multiplier = 100 x 1kΩ or 1,000Ω

• Fifth band (BR) brown = + 1%
Answer = 100kΩ+ 1% or 100,000 Ω+ 1% ,
,

10
The +% tolerance = reading of fourth/fifth band for tolerance.
Example 3

From the example 1 above,

10,000 Ω+ 1% = the tolerance is above 1% and under 1% representing (BR) brown

10,000Ω x 0.01 = 100 reading gap using volt-ohmmeter reading;

9,900Ω to 10,100 is considered as good reading;

Answer = minimum of 9,900Ω and maximum of 10,100Ω

so….it means plus with 100Ω and minus 100Ω

What’s More

Hey, nice to see you at this point of your lesson. In electrical installation and
maintenance, knowing one of the three is wholesome. The voltage, current, and
resistance. Their relationships make your knowledge complete. Let’s focus on
resistance!

Activity 3 - Solve Me!

Directions: Following the instructions on ohmmeter reading using volt-ohmmeter,
solve the given examples per graduation. Write your answer on your activity
notebook.

11
What I Have Learned

After performing the activities on computing ohms reading, now let us

complete the mensuration and let’s determine how much you have learned.

answer in activity 3 (What’s More) using multipliers. Write your answer on your
activity notebook.

Note: Using ohmmeter, your answer will be subjected to changes by adjusting

selector knob into the Ohms multiplier.
