THE ORIGINAL CHANDIGARH PLAN : PLANNING
FIG 1 THE FOUR MAJOR FUNCTIONS BASED ON CIAM THEORIES
THE CHANDIGARH PLAN

Chandigarh was arranged as an Administrative Town for a

populace of 5 lakhs and implicit two stages: Sectors 1 to 30
which framed the First Phase, and Sectors 31 to 47 comprising
the Second Phase of its turn of events. The City was moved
toward the standards of CIAM (Congress Internationaux d'
Architecture Moderne) Theories characterizing four
significant city-capacities for example Living, Working, Care of
Body and Spirit, and Circulation.

Le Corbusier considered the Master Plan of Chandigarh as

practically equivalent to Human Body as far as Head (the
Capitol Complex, Sector 1), Heart (the City Center, Sector 17),
Lungs (the Leisure Valley, endless open spaces, and area
greens), the Intellect (the social and instructive
organizations), the Circulatory System (the organization of Sketch courtesy – Prof. Vikram Aditya, University of Washington, USA

streets, the 7Vs) and the Industrial Area.

Working Areas – The Capitol Complex Sector 17,

commercial belts along Jan Marg, Madhya Marg, Himalaya
Marg , Udyog Path, Dakshin Marg.
Living - the Sectors
Care of body and spirit – Leisure Valley, Sukhna Lake, parks,
green belts, cultural belts and the educational belts
Circulation – the 7v network of roads on a modular grid
iron pattern .
THE ORIGINAL CHANDIGARH PLAN :HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DESIGN

A holistic approach was adopted for the

planning of Chandigarh which combined with
the farsightedness, vision and enthusiasm of
the leaders have together contributed to the PLANNING
making of a city a social organism and a work of
art.These interactive-interdependent
disciplines are:

SALIENT FEATURES OF THE CHANDIGARH PLAN
The capacity of Living possesses essential spot and has been coordinated into a cell V3
arrangement of areas dependent on the idea of a local unit. Every area (except for
areas 1 to 6, 12, 14, 17, and 26) has a size of 800m x 1200m which was resolved on the
boundary of giving all conveniences for example shops, schools, wellbeing focuses
and places of amusement and love inside a 10-minute strolling distance of the
occupants. The initially arranged populace of an area shifted somewhere in the range V3 V3
of 3000 and 20,000 relying on the size of plots, the geography of the space, and the
metropolitan plan contemplations. Each area is thoughtful person in character and
allows just four vehicular passages into its inside to give a peaceful and quiet climate
helpful for the enhancement of life.
