Architectural Design Studio 04 – ADS 04
Even Semester 2019/2020

Commercial Facilities in Urban Area of

Yogyakarta
1. Course Identity :

Subject : Studio of Architecture Design 04

Subject code : ARB – 401
Course Cluster : Integrated Design
Status : Obligatory Course
Credits : 6 credits
Semester : 4
Prerequisite : Studio of Architecture Design 3
Co-requisite : -
Faculty/ Department/ Study Program : Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning / Architecture/ Architecture
Graduate Degree

2. Course Description
Architectural Design Studio (ADS) 04 is a 6 credits compulsory course. It is conducted by applying
the method of studio based on urban context. This subject is provided in the 4th semester and
focuses on designing which is based on studio. In curriculum 2018, it is sequential with STUPA 3
which becomes its pre-requisite and becomes a prerequisite for STUPA 5 with a minimum value
of C.

The urgency of ADS 4 is designing fostered environment which is suitable for urban site location.
It is in line with the vision and mission of architecture department such as; creating character
Excellency for urban areas, fostered environment which becomes responsive towards social
changes in urban areas, and professionalism development which is based on planning.

After taking this course, the students are expected to be able to design simple mix – use building
in a site of 500 m2 – 750 m2, the size of building capacity 500m2-1500m2, consisting of 2-4 floors
accommodating spatial that boast the complexity of public buildings that respond to the social
needs of the local community with a large number of users. The result is a geometric composition
that responds to structural patterns in urban areas, structure systems and infrastructure, with the
control of artificial environments. In relation to SPC KAAB 2018 adopted the UII Architecture
Department, ADS 4 aims to achieve the following points as listed in table 1:

Table 1. Expected Output Indicators in The ADS according to SPC

SPC SPC Description Indicators
7 Architectural The students are able communicate ideas through various
Communication communication techniques, including presentations, manual and
digital drawings, communicative concept narratives
8 Form and Spatial The students are able to do a mass exploration process coherently,
Organization and arrange according to the rules of architectural design and
design building facades that consider the urban context for a
commercial facility
10 Site Planning The students are able to explore the sites, analyse them
comprehensively, and design them in an urban context for low-
floor commercial facilities that focus on driveways, parking and
landscape layout in accordance with local building regulations
11 Accessible The students are able to design a circuit path or circulation way
Design for all users from outside the building into the building and vice
versa on all floors of the building along with the design
consequences that must be applied correctly
12 Safety and Fire The students are able to create concepts related to building
Protection safety and security and design them in the context of low-rise
commercial buildings in urban areas by focusing in safety
systems against fire hazards and passive building safety
13 Integration of The students are able to make the concept of building system
Building System integration in the design which includes spatial, structural,
and Design mechanical electrical systems in the context of low-rise
commercial buildings in urban areas
14 Design of The students are able to analyse the existing condition of
Adaptive Re-use buildings, making it the main consideration in designing and
realizing new designs to accommodate low-floor commercial
facilities in urban areas according to the theory of adaptive re-use
and commercial buildings
18 Environment The students are able to make the concept or strategy of the
Control Systems passive design aspect and realizing the design idea for a low-floor
commercial facility that applies the principles / basis of passive
lighting, passive thermal, active indoor air quality and basic
acoustics according to problems / conflicts topics and urban
contexts

3. Design Project
The annual agenda for ADS this year is covered by the theme “Places for Commerce. ADS 04 take
the title Commercial Facilities in the Urban Area of Yogyakarta. The purpose of this
commercial facility is to improve the quality and vitality of an existing store / house / campus.
Existing houses, shops or campuses are explored in the quality of the buildings, current activities
and the surrounding context. Commercial facilities to be designed include culinary functions, co-
working spaces, and craft centers (see figure 1). New functions include at least 2 of the 3 functions
commercial is taking into account the existing building. Old functions can be maintained or
replaced altogether, according to the results of the analysis conducted. The selection of new
functions is largely determined by the results of the analysis of existing buildings, market needs
and other considerations that are closely related to the location of the site.

Commercial building is a building that has the main function as a space for trade activities, such
as shops, restaurants, cafes and so on. Existing buildings are used as a reference in redesigning so
that there is integration between old buildings with an approach adaptive re-use. Utilization of
the old building may be part or all, depending on the extent of analysis and concepts used.
ADS 4 is followed by 12 classes. Each class can reduce the task theme to a more specific topic.
Site location as a case study has been determined (See Table 3). Each group was divided into 3
groups to observe and collect site data within a specified area.

4. General Criteria of A Design

In brief, the criteria of a building which is designed in ADS 4 as follows :

Evaluation is conducted to determine the student's final grade by considering the results of the
process, final results, presentations during the Final Exam and Final Exam and the evaluation of
the cross-examiner lecturers as shown in Table 5 below. Formative evaluation is done to assess
the achievement of SPC on student products and summative evaluation to assess the performance
produced by students on the 6 products produced, including: logbooks, design reports, mockups,
design documents, critical notes, and posters. As for who will assess the work of students, with

8. Supporting Lecturers
The ADS lecture will be supported by 6 supporting lectures with competent speakers in their fields. The
students are obliged to make resume in each supporting lectures that will be assessed by an assistant. The
resume is about the important points of the material delivered and reflections on learning that can be
learned by students in supporting the design of ADS 4. Details of general lecture plans are in table 10

9. Implementation of Extra Studio

STUPA 4 learning is held 3 times a week, with two class meetings together with lecturers, namely
lectures on Tuesday and Thursday, and extra studio activities on Friday. Each class will also be
accompanied by 1 course assistant, who will attend one of the class schedules when together with
the lecturer (Tuesday or Thursday) and at the extra studio on Friday. Assistants have the
obligation to provide formative assessments of student assignments with the following
assignment details:

10. Reading Materials

ADS 4 lecturers had prepared reading material to enrich theoretical knowledge of the students
towards the study of commercial buildings in urban areas. This reading material is aimed to give
a positive contribution to the quality of designs produced by students. Furthermore, from the
reading material provided, it is hoped that there is an ISBN book product produced by several
ADS 4 classes as one of the outcomes of the learning process.
