E. LEARNING MATERIAL
Social function:
To ask and give suggestion to someone and give responses to the suggestion whether
accepting or refusing it.
To help someone who needs any suggestion or advice by giving our personal idea and
opinion in our daily life.
Language features:
The use of modal (should, can, could, etc)
Simple present tense
Formula:
S + Modal (should, ought to, could, etc) + V + complement
Example:
Maggie : I want to find something new that I have never known before. Can you
suggest me something, Alan?
Alan : You should read more books. They always provide new things for you.
Responding to suggestion
Accepting Refusing
Yes, I’d like/ love to. I tried that, but…
That sounds like a good idea. Thanks, but that won’t work/ help
Thank you/Thanks because …
I’ll do/try that. That’s a good idea, but …
Why didn’t I think of that? No, I’d rather not.
I don’t feel like it.
Example:
Kayla : I really want to go on vacation. But tickets for domestic flights are really expensive.
What should I do, Dan?
Dan : Maybe you can go to somewhere not too far. There are actually several places near
Jakarta that you can go for vacation, like Pulau Seribu. You only have to take a boat. I bet
it’s not that expensive.
Kayla : Boats? No, I don’t think so. I can’t ride boats more than an hour. I would get seasick.
Dan : How about somewhere out of town that is reachable by train or bus? You can go to
Yogyakarta, Surabaya, or Malang. There are many tourist attraction that you can visit
there.
Kayla : I have visited all of that places before. I want to go somewhere new.
Dan : Then I think you have to go abroad. You can go to Singapore for example. I heard that
international flight tickets are not as expensive as domestic flights. Maybe around Rp.
700.000 to Rp. 800.000?
Kayla : Now that sounds like a good idea! But how about the hotels? The flight tickets are
cheaper, but hotels might be more expensive. Do you have any recommendation for good
but cheap hotels?
Dan : I think there are many good and cheap hotels that you can find on Air BnB. But, here is
a tip, don’t choose the one that is in the middle of the city, instead choose the one that’s a
little bit farther from the city.
Kayla : But then it would be hard to go to the tourist attraction right? How should I get there
then?
Dan : You don’t have to worry. You should just take the bus. The bus’ route covers all part of
the city. And I suggest you to get a tourism pass. With that pass you can take the bus and
MRT everywhere for free.
Kayla : Woah, that sounds great, Dan. Thank you so much for your suggestion. I think I am
going to be preparing stuff for my vacation after this.
Dan : Don’t mention it, glad to help you, Kayla.

new food stall in Art Faculty’s cafeteria which is having a very delicious hotdog. Rea says
that she doesn’t like hotdog very much. Liam tells that the cafeteria also sells another food
