Question 1 Prove that the set U of all real symmetric

n × n matrices and set W of all real skew-symmetric
n × n matrices form vector sub-spaces of Mn×n . Find
their dimensions.
Question 2 Prove that Mn×n = U ⊕ W , where U and
W are as defined in Question 1.
Question 3 Let the subsets U, W ⊂ Mn×n be defined
as below.
U = {A ∈ Mn×n : trace(A)=0}, W = {A ∈ Mn×n : det(A)=0}
Determine if they are subspaces of Mn×n . If so, find
the corresponding dimension.
Question 4 Determine the null space and range and
their respective dimensions - of the following linear
transformations. Determine if they are one-one, on to
or both.
T : <3 → <3 , T (x1 , x2 , x3 ) = (x1 +x2 , x1 −x3 , x1 −x2 +x3 )
S : <3 → <2 , S(x1 , x2 , x3 ) = (x1 − x2 + x3 , x1 + x2 − x3 )

Question 5 Determine the null space and range of the

following linear transformations and their respective
dimensions. Determine if they are one-one, on to or
both.
T : P3 → P3 , T (p) = xp(0); S : P3 → P2 , S(p) = p0 (x)

Question 6 Determine the null space and range of the

following linear transformations.
T : P3 → P4 , [T (p)](x) = 0x p(t)dt.

true that ST = I and as well as T S = I?
Question 7 Determine the null space and range of the
following linear transformations. Determine if these
operators are invertible.
T : P2 → P3 , T (p) = xp(x); S : P3 → P3 , [S(p)](x) = p(x+1)+p(0)

Question 8 Determine the null space and range of the

following linear transformation and find their
dimensions. Determine if T is invertible.
T : P2 → <3 , T [p(x)] = (p(0), p0 (0), p(0) + p(1))

Question 9 Determine the null space and range of the

following linear transformation and find their
dimensions. Is T one-one or on to?
T : <3 → P3 , T (x1 , x2 , x3 ) = x1 +x2 x+x3 x2 +(x1 +x2 +x3 )x3
