WORKSHEET 3 ANSWER
1. a. Sequence of odd numbers
1,3,5,7,.......

3-1 =2
5-3 =2
7-5 =2
The difference between consecutive terms is the same
So it is an arithmetic sequence .
Common difference , d=2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b. Sequence of even numbers
2,4,6,8,.....

4–2=2
6–4=2
8–6=2
The difference between consecutive terms is the same
So it is an arithmetic sequence.
Common difference = 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
c. Sequence of fractions got as half of the odd numbers

, , , ,....

- = = =1

- = = =1
- = = =1

The difference between consecutive terms is the same

So it is an arithmetic sequence .
Common difference , d= 1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
d. Sequence of powers of 2
21,22,23,24,.....
ie, 2,4,8,16,...

4-2 =2
8–4=4
16 – 8 = 8
The difference between consecutive terms is not the
same . So it is not an arithmetic sequence .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
e. Sequence of reciprocals of natural numbers
1, , , ,...

- 1 = - = =-

- = - = =-

- = - = =-

The difference between consecutive terms is not the

same . So it is not an arithmetic sequence .

2. Number of coloured squares

8, 12, 16,20,...

12 - 8 = 4
16 - 12 = 4
20 - 16 = 4
The difference between consecutive terms is the same . So
it is an arithmetic sequence
Common difference , d= 4

3. a. 2,4,6,8,....

4-2=2
6-4=2
8-6=2
It is an arithmetic sequence
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b. 0,1,2,3,..

1-0=1
2-1=1
3-2=1
It is an arithmetic sequence

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
c. 2, 5, 8,11,...

5 -2=3
8 -5=3
11 - 8 = 3

It is an arithmetic sequence
4. a. first step = 10
second step 10+17.5 = 27.5
third step 27.5 +17.5 = 45
fourth step 45+17.5 = 62.5
b. 10,27.5,45,62.5,...

c. 27.5 - 10 = 17.5
45 - 27.5 = 17.5
62.5 - 45 = 17.5

The difference between consecutive terms is the same . So

it is an arithmetic sequence

5. We have to prove
the length of
perpendiculars form
an arithmetic
sequence

In the fig
the increment from the first perpendicular line to the
second perpendicular line is BC, the second to the third is
DE ,and the third to the fourth is GF.

If the increments are equal ,then the length of

perpendiculars are in arithmetic sequence .
ie, we have to prove
BC=DE=GF

Considedr ABC, CDE, EFG

AB = CD= EF (The perpendicular lines are equally
spaced)
CAB = ECD = GEF (The horizontal lines are parallel.
So these angles are corresponding angles )

ABC = CDE = EFG = 900. ( The vertical lines are

perpendicular )

One side and angle at the ends are equal in all these
triangles
So the triangles are equal
So, BC= DE= GF

The increments from one line to other are equal .

In other words, difference between length of consecutive
perpendicular lines is the same
So the length of perpendicular lines are in arithmetic
sequence .

6. xn = n3-6n2+13n-7

n=1, x1 = ( 1)3-6x(1)2+13x1-7
= 1-6+13-7
= 1+13-6-7
= 14-13
=1

n=2, x2 = (2)3-6x(2)2+13x2-7
= 8-24+26-7
= 8+26-24-7
= 34-31
=3

n=3, x3 = (3)3-6x(3)2+13x3-7
=27-54+39-7
=27+39-54-7
=66-61=5

n=4, x4 = (4)3-6x(4)2+13x4-7
= 64-96+52-7
= 64+52-96-7
=116-103
=13
the sequence is 1,3,5,13
3–1=2
5–3=2
13 – 5 = 8
The difference between consecutive terms is not the same
So it is not an arithmetic sequence .
