Answer the following questions:

1. State your own opinion or view why there is a need to study philosophy?

In my opinion, philosophy is significant for an individual’s growth and development

and in achieving the wholeness of one’s being. Philosophy is the process of learning,
discovering new things while investing to oneself. The new things are the missing parts of
us that we strive to find. It is a game of filling the parts and putting them into their right
places within a certain period. Having philosophy will help us identify problems and create
solutions. It will allow us to answer those questions that we cannot answer yet. With the
help of philosophy, we can solve the puzzle of our own self.

2. What are the concerns of practical men based on your own observation of how an ordinary
life is lived by everyone? In relation to it, why philosophy is a shame for others?

The concerns of a practical man are “What should I eat?”, “What clothes should I
wear?”, “What color should I pick?” etc. He only recognizes the material needs of a man
or things that the body needs in every day. His only concern is the product, he is not
interested on how the product was made. Hence, result is the only thing that matters in
everything.

Philosophy is a shame for others because they believe that it is just quibbling and
deemed it as insignificant. The real value of philosophy is only to be found among the
goods of the mind, and only those who are heedful to these goods can be convinced that
the inquiry of philosophy is significant.

3. What is Ethics and the different types of ethical inquiry?

Ethics is the study of morality and practical reasoning. It deals on how an individual
ought to act in every situation that they may encounter in life. Ethics is classified into three
types of inquiry: normative ethics, descriptive ethics, and meta-ethics. Normative ethics is
concerned with the standard of what is right or wrong. It comprises the construction of
moral rules that have direct inference for what human acts, institutions, and ways of living
ought to be. On the other hand, descriptive ethics or comparative ethics is concerned with
people’s belief about morality and on how societies manage behavior. It is frequently
named as an empirical study. In contrast to descriptive and normative ethics, meta-ethics
is concerned with the nature of morality.
