Lab Materials needed for Chemistry & Physics A

Project 1: Scientific Method

 4 ice cubes
 4 cups
 Measuring Spoons
 Salt
 Stopwatch

Project 2: Phase Changes

 Small Pot
 Measuring Cup (must have mL and oz markings both
 Thermometer (should have units in ºC
Note: If your thermometer only measures in units of °F, then the temperature can
be converted to °C using the following equation:

TC = (TF−32.0) / 1.8

TC means temperature in Celsius. TF means temperature in Fahrenheit.

To obtain a temperature in Celsius (TC) plug the value obtained for the temperature
in Fahrenheit (TF) into the equation and conduct the calculation.
 A Spoon (wooden, plastic, or metal)
 Ice
 Water
 Stove

Safety Note
You will be working around a hot stove, so pay attention and be careful. In order to avoid getting
burned, be sure to use the appropriate protective equipment (pot holders).

Project 3: Bonding and the Periodic Table

 20 Blank 3x5 inch Index Cards
 3 Rolls of Pennies
 1 Pencil
 30 cm of masking tape
 1 Periodic Table of Elements
 Internet Access
Project 4: Temperature of Chemical Reactions
 A Column Thermometer
- (must be able to measure a minimum of 20 ºC (like one used for outdoors)
- should have units of ºC
Note: If your thermometer only measures in units of °F, then the temperature can be converted to
°C using the following equation:

TC = (TF−32.0) / 1.8

TC means temperature in Celsius. TF means temperature in Fahrenheit.

To obtain a temperature in Celsius (TC) plug the value obtained for the temperature in
Fahrenheit (TF) into the equation and conduct the calculation.
 A Timer (on cell phone, or stop watch, or watch) Must Show Seconds
 2 White Foam Coffee Cups
 1 Cup of Distilled Water (Must be Distilled Water)
 4 Tablespoons of Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate)
 2 Tablespoons of Fragrance-free DampRid moisture absorber (calcium chloride)
- Available in hardware stores
 2 Cups of Vinegar (Acetic Acid)

Project 5: Rock Candy Lab (Note waiting for crystals to grow may take 5 to 8 days)
 1 Cup of Water per Candy Solution
 3-5 Cups of Sugar per Candy Solution
- (Must be regular white granulated sugar, non-organic)
 Crystal Collector (such as a thick string or straw or wooden skewer or chopstick)
 Solution container (as many as needed)
- Note: The container can be any see-through glass or jar that will let you watch
the crystals grow. (Like a Mason Jar)
 Small Saucepan
 Stove
 Wooded Spoon
 Oven Mitt
 Funnel or Ladle
 Your independent variable, if it is an object or ingredient (read instructions)
