BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Many scientists are given credit in the development of the theories in
electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves are waves that are created as result
of oscillations of electric and magnetic fields, they propagate through space, carries
energy and moves at a speed of 3x108 m/s. Electromagnetic theory proposed by
James Clerk Maxwell.
Scientists involved in the development of the Electromagnetic Theory are
James Clerk, Maxwell, Andre Ampere, Michael Faraday, Hans Christian Oersted and
Heinrich Hertz.

The electromagnetic theory proposed by James Clerk Maxwell proposed the
Electromagnetic theory stating that electromagnetic waves are oscillations of electric
and magnetic fields that travel through space as waves moving at the speed of light.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
8
Waves are disturbances that travel through space-time, accompanied by a
transfer of energy. It is characterized by amplitude, frequency, and wavelength.
The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic waves
arranged according to the frequency and wavelength.
ACTIVITY
Make a graphic organizer to summarize the topic on Electromagnetic Spectrum. Use
a separate sheet of paper.
9
REMEMBER
Electromagnetic Waves are disturbance that carries energy that does not require a
medium to travel. They vary with different wavelengths, frequency and energy. The
longer the wavelength, the lesser the frequency and energy. The shorter the
wavelength the greater the frequency and energy.
POST TEST
1. What relationship exists between the wavelength and frequency of a wave?
A. directly proportional C. directly square proportional
B. inversely proportional D. inversely square proportional
2. What will happen to the frequency of an EM wave if its wavelength is
increased?
A. Also increase C. Decreases
B. Increases 2x D. Decreases 2x
3. Electromagnetic waves are produced by vibrating
A. Electrical charges C. Protons
B. Water waves D. Neutrons
4. Which of the following is FALSE about Electromagnetic Waves?
A. Transverse in nature.
B. Needs a medium to travel
C. Travel as fast as the speed of light in a vacuum
D. Arranged in an electromagnetic spectrum in terms of increasing
frequency from radio waves to gamma rays.
5. What will happen to the energy possessed by an electromagnetic wave if the
wavelength increases?
A. Also increase C. Decreases
B. Increases 2x D. Decreases 2x
