Transactional Leadership Theory

Transactional Leadership Theory focuses on the basic management process of controlling,
organizing, and short-term planning. Transactional leaders are concerned with maintaining the group's
structure. They are in charge of explaining what is expected of group members, communicating the benefits
of executing jobs successfully, describing the penalties of failure, and providing feedback to keep workers
on target. Motivating and directing followers through transactional leadership essentially requires appealing
to their own self-interest. Which means that your followers are driven by rewards and punishment. They
want to obtain or receive their rewards at the same time, they don’t want to be punished. Transactional
leaders have official authority and responsibilities in the organization, which gives them power. The basic
purpose of the follower is to follow the leader's directions. Rules, procedures, and standards are essential
in transactional leadership. The only downside that I can think of this theory is that followers are not self-
motivated. They have to be closely monitored and controlled to get the work done from them. Also,
creativity is limited since the goals and objectives are already set.
I have chosen this theory above all because I myself as a follower is motivated by a leader’s
compliments, rewards and fears punishment. For me, compliments and rewards are what makes a person
motivated and driven. It shoves them to do their best everytime and avoid mistakes.

Motivational Theory: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Motivation is very important in an organization. Employees in an organization must be motivated to
be productive, and management style plays a key role in this. Non-monetary rewards can also be used to
motivate your subordinates. If employees are inspired and motivated, they will fulfill their tasks properly,
and the results will always be good with efficient output. Organizations that are focused on results will go to
great lengths to motivate their employees and reach their full potential.
In this theory, workers are motivated when managers fulfill their needs. Maslow formulated a theory
of needs which is arranged in hierarchical order. Besides the basic needs for food, shelter and clothing,
safety from physical, harm, and social interaction, they also need the recognition and appreciation of
managers, as well as rewards. Individual needs are vital and necessary for the maintenance of life as well
as the growth and well-being of being individual. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs forms the basis of theories
that try to explain job satisfaction. If your subordinate feel that they are not treated well and if their
efforts are not recognized, they might as well resign. Because having self-actualization or satisfaction in a
job is very important.
