Applying Quality Standards (AQS)
What are Quality Standards?
Quality standards are defined as documents that provide requirements,
specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be used consistently to
ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their
purpose.
Standards provide organizations with the shared vision, understanding,
procedures, and vocabulary needed to meet the expectations of their
stakeholders. Because standards present precise descriptions and terminology,
they offer an objective and authoritative basis for organizations and consumers
around the world to communicate and conduct business.

Standards Operating Procedures


Standard operating procedures are written, step-by-step instructions that describe how to perform
a routine activity. Employees should complete them in the exact same way every time so that the business
can remain consistent. Standard operating procedures help maintain safety and efficiency for
departments such as: Production/operations, Sales and customer service, Employee training, Legal, and
Financial.
Standard Operating Procedures - A written method of controlling a practice in accordance with
predetermined specifications to obtain a desired outcome. SOPs are written steps to explain good
manufacturing practices (GMP), plant safety routines, and financial controls to secure assets, or IT
security measures that employees are to follow. SOPs are step by step procedures on how to do
something that is critical to quality, critical to safe operations, or critical to security.
Characteristic of Materials Used in Specific Projects

Fault Identification and Reporting

Occupational health and safety (OHS) relate to health, safety, and welfare issues in the workplace. OHS
includes the laws, standards, and programs that are aimed at making the workplace better for workers,
along with co-workers, family members, customers, and other stakeholders.
Improving a company's occupational health and safety standards ensures good business, a better
brand image, and higher employee morale.
Occupational health and safety are concerned with addressing many types of workplace hazards,
such as: Chemicals, Physical hazards, Biological agents, Psychological fallout, ergonomic issues, and
accidents.
OHS Management Issues
A. Quantity of work (ultimely completion, limited production), B. Quality of work (failure to meet quality standards)
Specific quality standards for:
1. Hardware, 2. Production Process, 3. Final Product, and 4. Customer Service
How to monitor workplace operations?
Monitoring operations requires management oversight, employee feedback and customer reviews. It can help provide
specific directions for employees, which can lead to improved time management and increased productivity.

Seven simple tools can be used by any professional to ease the quality improvement process: flowcharts,
check sheets, Pareto diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, histograms, scatter diagrams, and control charts.
1. Flowcharts describe a process in as much detail as possible by graphically displaying the steps in proper sequence.
2. Check sheets show how many times each value occurs, and their information is increasingly
helpful as more data are collected.
3. The Pareto diagram is named after Vilfredo Pareto, a 19th-century Italian economist who postulated
that a large share of wealth is owned by a small percentage of the population.
4. The cause and effect diagram are sometimes called an Ishikawa diagram after its inventor. It is
also known as a fish bone diagram because of its shape. A cause and effect diagram describes a
relationship between variables.
5. The histogram plots data in a frequency distribution table. What distinguishes the histogram from
a check sheet is that its data are grouped into rows so that the identity of individual values is lost.
6. A scatter diagram shows how two variables are related and is thus used to test for cause and effect
relationships.

7. A control chart displays statistically determined upper and lower limits drawn on either side of a
process average.
